BANGKOK: -- The poker players who allegedly had a Bt4 million gambling debt with slain night-entertainment tycoon Somyot Suthangkool will be summoned by police for a second round of questioning.

Meanwhile, investigators are checking security camera footage from Bangkok's Serithai Road to trace the shooter's escape route, after he reportedly disappeared into Soi Serithai 11. Somyot, 62, was shot dead in the parking lot of a shark fin restaurant in Suan Luang district on June 29. Police issued arrest warrants for the gunman and his motorcycle getaway driver.

Senior investigator Pol Maj-General Sombat Milinthajinda said the poker players' testimony didn't match that of Somyot's wife and his lawyers. So, the police will gather more evidence and summon them to provide more information, he added.

Police also contacted those who had disputes with Somyot over legal matters and asked them to submit documents and case details so that police could interview them. Two of them gave information to police yesterday, Sombat said.

Somyot's office had been handling 10 lawsuits, most of which were drug-related.

Although a family conflict involving Somyot over a juice factory was not ruled out as motive, it was given less weight because the family members wouldn't gain anything from Somyot's death, Sombat said.

Were they caught gambling?

That's what I was thinking. My first wife and three or four of her friends were arrested several times for playing cards at home. We didn't know of an illegal casino to go to so had no choice (overall I think my late first wife pretty well broke even on her card playing -- surely would have been much worse at a casino). I wonder about Somyot, too. Shouldn't they be checking his estate for evidence of money laundering and illegal transactions? cheesy.gif
