July 7, 201511 yr Had a friend who lives up-country come into Bangkok for a visit last weekend. He was really in the mood for some good live music. I hadn't been keeping up with the scene lately so I called a friend who recommended "NOTHING BUT THE BLUES" on Soi Thong Lo (off the "U-Turn" ramp under the bridge on the Petchabury end) Walked in about 9pm on Saturday night...place was almost empty; two Thai musicians playing guitar and violin, doing covers of Dylan and James Taylor..."Oh-Ohh" I thought. The guy on guitar turned out to be really good...beautiful tone and a good singing voice...actually on key. Soon they were joined by a bass player and drummer; things got electric and up-tempo and they were very, very good. They took a break and this older, kind of dumpy looking Thai guy appeared with a guitar case. He looked like a lost Tuk-Tuk driver. Far from it. He took over as lead the next set and blew us away right from the start. He had incredible guitar technique and a real blues delivery...didn't sound imitation at all. These guys could really play...I enjoyed myself more than I had in a long time...they closed with a cover of "Bad Love" that was really amazing. I think they are called "The BluesLine Band"...They play there on Saturday nights. The club serves decent food as well and has a nice though not extensive selection of beers. Recommended!
