Cheap cheese

Featured Replies

Hi Just bought some good value Bega cheese at Tops on Sukumvit Half price promotion 209 for 500 gms .Cheese week here we come !!

Makro - 2kg of Anchor cheddar is about 750 Baht. 1.5kg of Edam about the same price.

If you don't like the taste you can use it as a door stop.

(actually, it's ok).

That's all Edam is fit for. It should have "Goodyear" stamped on it.

Wow ? Anchor for 750 2 k !! Bega at half price and in 250 g packs is 836 Those Kiwis or is it the Malaysian co that owns them ?

Anyone saw a real cottage cheese with 0 % fat?

I saw some normal cottage cheese from Australia (or maybe it was NZ) but it was full of chemicals. But no real one with only milk and salt.

Moved to Western Food for more visibility in the topic.

You can make your own cheese, but it's very painful.

ham,plain crisps and anchor.

crusty bread and anchor with a few cans of cider.oh not forgetting some pickle onions.

Cheap cheese, a bottle of milk and a little lemon juice or vinegar and flavouring of you choice. Easy to make!

making cheese is no big deal, but finding non "Ultra high pasteurized milk", is a pain in the ass.

For decent cheese you need good, preferably raw milk.

I've tried almost all milk brands from Makro/Lotus + Co.

None of them was able to form a solid curd (even with calcium chloride, cultures and rennet)

This is not real cheese, but more or less a creamy "Quarkstyle" bread spread, like Paneer cheese from India.

You won't be able to produce a decent hard cheese, or even a Brie/Camembert.

Yeah, you need to find a dairy, there happens to be a very good one near to me in Khon Kaen that is Canadian owned and costs 21 Baht a liter.

The best way to locate your nearest dairy is to contact the DPO, Dairy Farm Promotion Organization of Thailand, http://www.dpo.go.th/?page_id=1347

You can get cheese making things like rennet and cultures on Baht and Sold.

If you make your own cheese it works out at around 20 baht per 100g

Life is too short...

Is this a recipe for silver cleaner or furniture polish? bah.gif Easy to make indeed, but why would you want to????

I bought 2 humane mouse traps, several times they took the cheese bait, and got out. But the Edam caught them first time! so there's another use for Edam!

Bring the milk just to the boil, add the lemon juice/vinegar. Drain in a muslin cloth for 30mins. Add salt garlic spring onion, and mash with a potato masher or fork. Delicious as a spread for bread or biscuits. Recipes are all over you tube. Look for farmers cheese.

Why would I want to? ........Because I can.

I've just got back from Makro. My local branch (Rangsit) have just started selling a 900gms block of Monterey Farms cheddar cheese; 250 baht. This is the regular price, not a special offer. I took a chance and bought some. It tastes fine, quite mild, but great for sarnies and cooking.
