Thailand & Laos discuss anti-human trafficking campaign

UBON RATCHATHANI, 9 July 2015 (NNT) – Thai and international anti-human trafficking agencies have convened a meeting to look for ways to strengthen their crackdown on human trade along the border.

The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security’s anti-human trafficking division, Japan International Cooperation (JICA) and Alliance Anti Traffic Organization met to discuss the progress of and obstacles to the anti-human trade campaign in Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani Province and Laos’ Champasak Province.

According to the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, woman and child trafficking usually involves exploitation of them, while human trafficking in men is usually in the form of forced labor in fishing industry. Thai and Laotian authorities have been cooperating in solving these problems all along.

Aside from giving updates on the progress of the human trade clampdown, the meeting is expected to expand the scope of collaboration between the multi-disciplinary human trade busting units between Thailand and Laos, thus boosting the efficiency of the operations.

Fishing boats urged to register by July 15

BANGKOK, 9 July 2015 (NNT) – The government has given unlicensed fishing operators a 10-day period of grace to register their boats, at its comprehensive mobile service in all 22 seaside provinces.

To help the remaining 3,000 ships which are risking a fishing ban, the government has set up the comprehensive mobile service units to inspect and register unlicensed boats and where possible issue them with the essential papers.

According to PM's Office Deputy Spokesperson Major General Sansern Kaewkamnerd, all the mobile units are now dealing with an influx of license requests from fishing boat owners. The operators’ main problems include a failure to obtain the correct type of certified fishing tools, overdue license renewals and attempted use of an incorrect types of license.

Maj Gen Samsern called on all operators to register their vessels before the deadline. He explained that the campaign was indeed aimed at helping law-abiding operators run their businesses smoothly, while screening out those trying to benefit from legal loopholes.

The mobile units are on duty from until15th July.
