Gas stations in Deep South re-open after strike

YALA, 13 July 2015 (NNT) - Major gas stations in the Deep South have re-opened after a brief strike against the provincial administration organisations (PAOs)’s new sales tax on fuel.

Station operators temporarily closed the establishments for around three hours on Monday, after local oil traders failed to reach an agreement with the PAO regarding the newly enforced tax.

Oil retailers had earlier requested a delay on the imposition of the tax. Negotiations stalled, and the strike took place during rush hour on Monday. Motorists in the area were severely affected by the closure, as they were forced to search for fuel elsewhere.

The PAOs of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat in October last year issued an ordinance to levy a 5-satang per litre tax on all kinds of fuel, including liquified petroleum gas (LPG) for vehicles, effective July 13.

The Yala PAO said 12 oil operators have officially registered to pay the tax on fuel. The deadline for registration has been extended to July 20 to allow more fuel operators to comply.

DDC warning over spread of Diphtheria

13 June 2015, BANGKOK (NNT) -The Department of Disease Control has issued a warning over Diphtheria. It comes after a two-year-old Burmese boy was reported to have died from the disease despite having been vaccinated during his infancy.

The Department anticipates that migration from neighboring countries, where the disease was found in the past two weeks, might be the cause.

According to the Department’s report, from a total number of 26 diphtheria patients, there were five deaths in 2014-2015. Vulnerable groups are people in the age range of 20-50 who are now invited to get a free-of-charge vaccination at government clinics and hospitals nationwide.
