It's only 40 minutes. Which company do you use? And where do you (or can you) depart from? ahh ur heading to Sadao NOT Satun How far is Satun from Sadao or Padang Besar? Is Satun a land border, or do you need to take a ferry?
July 14, 201510 yr Author Satun is on the west coast of Thailand and where you would go to take the ferry to Langkawit The actual border is Wang Prajan about 50 kms from Satun its a land border an very small and pleasant, nice weekend market an its located in the national forest. To get there from Sadao u would need go back to Hat yai an than head west about 140 kms or so total ( Hat yai to Satun is less than 100 ) its actually quicker to go from Wang Prajan to Sadao via Malaysia Has anyone here used the Padang Besar border with a car?
July 14, 201510 yr Can you buy insurance at the Satun crossing ? I know you can at Sadao. A know a guy that rode through the Satun crossing on a Norwegian registered bike, and he wrote to tell me the immigration guys told him to buy insurance from any bank and waved him on. Caused him untold grief further down the road. I ride through Padang all the time, never any problems - no one bats an eyelid. Edited July 14, 201510 yr by recom273

There was a bomb? Where? I thought Sadao, Padang Besar and Satun were all quite safe. Are you sure you aren't talking about either Yala, Pattani or Narathiwat?

I have, but it was years ago. It was my first crossing by car to another country in SEA. I didn't have the white on black number plate stickers, but these were made up for me at the border, took 2 hours though. I gather you would already have them, if not, get them done in Bangkok or anywhere else, not the border otherwise you're wasting serious time. Insurance was available on the Malaysian side of the border but when I went in, I initially didn't buy a policy thinking my Thai insurance would cover me as far as Penang but the checkpoint about 5km from the border caught me out and the officer, after asking where I was heading and me telling him "Kuala Lumpur", which was my original furthest planned destination even though in the end we didn't have time to drive further than Penang, he advised me to go back to the border to buy a policy and with the help of a helpful Thai immigration official who just happened to be on the Malaysian side in her car, we purchased a local policy and then off we went. That part didn't take long, unlike the number plate sticker fiasco, which took a hell of a long time. On our return, we crossed back into Thailand via Sadao.

Wang Prajan (Prachun) Border Satun yes , u buy insurance from a small shop on the right hand side in Thailand as u approach immigration, also can get stickers made there. Insurance takes maybe 10 minutes, stickers same ( 100 baht each) You than enter the car line, first stop is passports, next stop they issue the tax disk, next stop open ur trunk Once u enter Malaysia there is NOTHING , not any shop, no money changers, nada , zip and that was back in March 2014 All the Malays cross to the thai side for the markets Insurance and the stickers are available in Malaysia at the Sadao border on the right hand side , takes 20 minutes, also there u get ur round tax certificate Sadao is tough cause they have a small hand held machine that can test the % of ur window film only 40% is allowed. Before Wang Prajan did not have the tester Edited July 15, 201510 yr by phuketrichard
