KUALA LUMPUR: -- Members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have been called upon by Malaysia, Australia, Belgium, Netherlands and Ukraine to support the establishment of an international criminal tribunal as a mean to seek justice for the victims of downed Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17.

Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 was downed on July 17 last year while en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, killing 298 on board.

Malaysia’s Foeign Ministry said in a statement that Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, Netherlands and Ukraine are working to secure UNSC support for the tribunal.

The statement said the tribunal would be an appropriate response as the incident and the related implications on the safety of civil aviation affect the interests of the international community as a whole.

“An international criminal tribunal under Chapter VII of the UN Charter sends a clear message that the international community will not tolerate such acts threatening international peace and security by endangering civil aviation,” it said.
