I am having buttock pain for a couple of months and it seems to be getting worse now.

It usually hurts when I sit and I cannot stand a seated position for more than a few minutes, and it bothers as well when lying down. It spreads in the leg as well.

The problem is I work on a computer all day and mostly works seated (try to stand from time to time).

I heard it could be sciatica. What do you recommend? And if seeing a doctor is one recommendation, which one? Anyone good at St Louis?

If that may be a factor, I had several episodes of patella dislocation.

Thanks for your help and recommendations.

Scatica simply means pain/inflammation along the sciatic nerve, it can have many different causes.

For what you describe my first thought is piriformis syndrome, which occurs when a specific muscle within the buttocks becomes too tight and compresses the sciatic nerve.

There are some simple tests you can do to see if this is the likely cause, and if it is, then the treatment is primarily stretches and exercises.

Google "piriformis syndrome test" and, if positive, then see http://www.spine-health.com/conditions/sciatica/piriformis-muscle-stretch-and-physical-therapy. You can also google "piriformis syndrome treatment" and find some videos demonstrating this and other stretches.

Exercises/stretched are the cornerstone of treatment, byt application of heat (heating pad, soaks in a hot tub etc) may also help some. Best if followed by some stretches.

Thai massage may also be of some help.

If none of this works, or if based on the tests it does not seem to be due to a tight piriformis muscle, then you may need to exclude a spinal problem for which I recommend Dr. Wicharn at BNH Hospital. But start with the exercsies/stretches as most likely that's all you need.

Thanks a lot Sheryl and fish fingers,

It looks like it can be piriformis syndrome indeed from the few videos that I checked.

Did some of the stretches fish fingers recommended and looked for some other that I will try later, and I already feel a bit less discomfort.

I'll have to avoid some postures like crossing legs which I do a lot and apparently put a lot of stress on the piriformis muscle.

Thanks a lot for your recommendations, it's really helpful!!

I will let you know what worked out for me.

I did a lot of hard (nahk-nahk, it means heavy) 2 hour oil massages. Have to shop around and find a good masseuse. One that can feel the muscle tension and work it out. I went through about 4 before I found a good one.

I had so much pain, Thai Massage was out. I could live with them now but I am a massage freak.

I finally found one. She got rid of it but after a little over a year it is coming back. I just started up on massages again.

Had pain in my hips when I lay on my side that would wake me up at night

how far down your legs does it radiate? what is your age and history of back problems? if any , how long have you had the symptoms, what sports do you play , why would your patella have anything to do with it ?
