Phang Nga tourists opt for inland attractions amid storm scare

PHANG NGA, 17 July 2015 (NNT) – Tourists in the southern province of Phang Nga have opted for inland attractions, due to storms gripping the Andaman Sea.

Thai and foreign tourists have been traveling to waterfalls and other inshore attractions instead of island destinations, following the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department’s warning about stormy weather and flash floods.

Meanwhile, local officials and natural park personnel have stepped up safety measures for locals and tourists. Regular inspections have been scheduled for waterfront areas. If the wave climate becomes too dangerous, then officials will install safety warnings or issue bans on swimming.

The southwestern monsoon over the Andaman Sea is expected to bring scattered thundershowers across the southern region from now until July 20. Waves will be particularly strong during this period and flash floods are likely in some areas.

Waterworks chief official in Ayutthaya affirms sufficient supply of tap water for local residents

AYUTTHAYA, 17 July 2015 (NNT) - Director of Ayutthaya Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) Thawat Konnak has confirmed water distribution remains normal at 120,000 cubic meters per day, definitely enough for consumption purposes in the province.

According to him, two pumping stations located in Nakhon Luang and Bang Sai Districts are pumping in 72 cubic meters of water per second from the Chao Phraya Dam. The two stations will take more water whenever the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) releases more water for ecological conservation.

“Only in part of the day, for example during daytime, Ayutthaya PWA needs to slightly lower water pressure to keep the clean water tank full for use at the time when demand of water is high,” said Mr.Thawat.

He added the PWA has expedited the extension of water pipelines to reach out those households that have not yet been connected to the province’s water supply system. The project is expected to be completed by 2022.

State revenue over past 9 months misses target by THB65.5bn

BANGKOK, 17 July 2015 (NNT) – The Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) has indicated that revenue collection for the first nine months of the 2015 fiscal year is short of target by about 65.5 billion baht, owing to the ailing economy.

Director of the FPO Kritsada Jinavijarana reported that the government was able to collect 1.63 trillion baht in revenue between October 2014 and June 2015. However, the figure was below its target by 65.5 billion baht or 3.9 percent due mainly to the economic slowdown, which led to disappointing collections of corporate income tax, value-added tax (VAT), petroleum income tax and car excise tax.

Mr Kritsada noted that, although VAT collection failed to meet its target, it posted 7 percent growth compared to the same period of the previous year. He considered the improvement as a sign that consumption and investment in Thailand are still healthy.

Moreover, the collection of fuel tax exceeded its nine-month target by 43 billion baht while many state enterprises and other state-run agencies were also reported to have outperformed their targets.
