NACC resolves to probe Democrat govt's rice-distribution scheme

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) yesterday resolved to further investigate a corruption allegation related to the Democrat Party's rice-distribution policy, NACC secretary-general Sansern Poljiak said yesterday.

The NACC will look into the incident in which Veerasak Jinarat, then assistant to commerce minister, handed a Bt25 million cashier cheque to MT Centre Trade Co Ltd. The Bt25 million was earmarked to cover student loans for a polytechnic school in a Northeast province. The company allegedly used this money as collateral to sign contracts with the Marketing Organisation for Farmers.

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, who was then prime minister and chairman of the National Rice Policy, along with a few other members of the then-Cabinet and state officials are facing investigation over allegations of malfeasance in connection to the scheme in 2010.
