Govt may bow to pressure and reshuffle Cabinet

BANGKOK: -- Pressure is mounting on the government to reshuffle the Cabinet earlier than expected. The reshuffle could take place at the end of this month or early August, a source from Government House said yesterday.

A meeting between key leaders of the government was held at Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's residence a few days ago to discuss the pending reshuffle.

The source said key factors behind the reshuffle were the state of the economy and pressure from overseas. Those attending the meeting included Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, Justice Minister General Paiboon Koomchaya and Deputy Defence Minister and Army chief General Udomdej Sitabutr.

Since the economy is the main problem, it's likely that Finance Ministry's permanent secretary Rungson Sriworasat will replace Finance Minister Sommai Phasee. Also, Somkid Jatusripitak could replace Industry Minister Chakramon Phasukavanich.

It has been hinted that Udomdej, who will retire as Army chief in September, is being considered for the defence minister's post, while Prawit would stay on as deputy PM. Army chief of staff General Chatchalerm Chalermsuk, who will also retire, is likely to replace Udomdej as deputy defence minister.

Meanwhile, Prayut's classmate General Yodyuth Boonyatikarn might replace Agriculture Minister Peetipong Phuengbun na Ayutthaya.

Govt.(Prayut) may bow to pressure to re-shuffle Cabinet?

I don't think any kind of pressure would move Prayut to make a change if his cronies were doing a good job. I am not sure about Rungson, but Somkid seems a good choice although probably better qualified for Finance than Industry. As for Prayut's classmate being selected to address the country's massive agriculture problems, probably an ideal choice as all the top military brass appear very good at spreading fertilizer (B___ S____) around.

Under pressure from whom ?

Could it be those close to the corridors of power but not yet allowed to walk them or at least not in a senior enough position and if not catered for could become a problem ?

Summary: in the reshuffle, no General will lose their Ministerial jobs. 3 civilian Ministers will be fired, and one additional General will become a Minister.

Thailand is so lucky that they have so many multi-talented officers to choose from.

Great, the Generals have been re-reading Keynes and Friedman and the solution is in sight.

They should resign en masse, bow and ask the people for forgiveness for a lousy job just like their Japanese or Korean counterparts. That will be an excellent PR work and demonstrate that they are responsive to the people suffering. But this is Thaland and easier to blame someone and divisive ideas to stir up hatred towards the government.
