Huge fire at Surimi fish factory in Samut Sakhon

SAMUT SAKHON: -- A midnight fire broke out at Andaman Surimi Industries Co's plant in Samut Sakhon and raged until early in the morning today causing damages to a huge godown where packages of processed fish meat ready for export and other paper boxes and materials were stored.

Initial damage was estimated by the plant manager Mr Anuchit Techanitisawat at 10 million baht.

A factory mechanic Mingman Kunkaeo, 20, said he saw smokes flowing out of the godown as he and a colleague and two security guards were having their fingers scanned in front of the factory office.

He said the godown was shut and all workers have left when the fire broke out inside.

He immediately called the guards to rush to the factory in order to break the door open to put out the fire. But the door was locked and they could not open it.

Firemen were then alerted for help.

More than 10 fire engines arrived but it took them more than three hours to keep the fire under control.

All the processed Surimi meat, plastic packages and other materials used for the meat processing were destroyed in the fire.

It was not immediately known the cause of the fire but initially electrical short circuit was suspected.

Forensic police are inspecting the fire scene to look into the cause.

The company is a major exporter of surimi fish.
