Bomb kills monk and soldier in Pattani

PATTANI: -- A monk and a soldier were killed Saturday morning when militants detonated a powerful roadside bomb while a unit of soldiers was escorting a group of monks to receive alms from local people in Saiburi district of Pattani.

Six others who include two soldiers, a monk and three civilians were also in the bomb attack which happened at 6.30 am near Wat Nimonwatanaram in the municipal area of Saiburi.

They were rushed to Pattani hospital shortly afterwards by police.

A combined force of police and soldiers combed the vicinity of the explosion scene as they believed the militants living near the place detonated the 10-kilogramme home made bomb.

Killed were Phra Ekkapol Sri-osot, 39, a monk from Wat Nimonwatanaram, and Lance Corporal Wanmai Rakano, 28.

The soldier were among a group of soldiers giving protection to monks on a morning walk out if the temple to receive alms from nearby Buddhist community.

As they were about to return to the pickup truck to take them back to the temple, a roadside bomb was detonated, seriously wounded the L/C Wanmai and the monk.

Both died upon arrival at Sauburi hospital.

By late this morning forensic and explosive ordnance disposal police were still inspecting the area to look for evidence while a combined force encircled suspected houses to hunt down the militants.

I hate to say it, I make you right. It's not going to just go away and nobody seems to want to take 'ownership' of the problem
