Soldiers remove Thaksin birthday wish banner in Phrae

BANGKOK: -- Soldiers and police yesterday removed a cloth banner hanging on a roadside tree in Phrae province with a written message wishing the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra a happy birthday.

The fabric banner carrying a message written in red paint reads “July 26, wish Thaksin lives several ten thousand years.”

Police and soldiers arrived at the scene to remove the cloth banner after passers-by alerted the Phrae police that a birthday banner was seen hanging on a teak tree on Kilometre markers 5-6 of Highway 1023 from Long to Phrae.

A patrol unit was then despatched to patrol the road and found the cloth banner of 1×0.8 metre size hanging on the roadside tree.

Police and soldiers did not identify anyone responsible for hanging the cloth banner but said the scene is near a house of a local redshirt leading member.

Security authorities later alerted local authorities to report if any more banners were found in their responsible areas with instruction to remove them away.

But so far there was no report of any more signs were found.

Typical PT nonsense. Their promises, policies and wishes take no note of reality.

Typical PT nonsense. Their promises, policies and wishes take no note of reality

Same as Typical Democrat nonsense. Their promises, policies and wishes take no note of reality.

The reason Dems in Thailand have not won an election in more than 20 years.

Only the barrels of an armed coup guarantees them ascent to power, not the will of the people.

I am not enamored of PT historical performance. I am not a cheerleader for the Dems either.

Remember, Pleak Phibunsongkhram, Sarit, 2006, et all? Same, same only different times for the dysfunctional semi-feudal patronage system and events.

One good aspect of Thainess is the patient endurance of the people to wait until the balance of power is restored to a quasi-democracy to then express their will.

Note to Anti-PTnistas: Please, flame me with valid, rational, factual arguments. Name calling and taking the thread ad hominem only shows lack of intellectual.prowess.

Okay, will answer your request, "get off". There, does that fulfill your desire, at least today, to be noticed. Always happy to do my civic duty in lending a hand to those less unfortunate. Hope the rest of the day goes well for you.

Your post is a non-answer to mine, a non sequitur (look it up).

You took thread and post ad hominem (look it up).

Wanting to say something doesn't mean to have something to say.

How hard is it to stay on topic? Obviously, to some, an impossibility.

forget about it Thailand .... move on !!

Well said !

Thailand will move on as soon as the people have an opportunity to express their will in elections free from gun barrels or coercion .

As supported by the majority of Thailand ... most agree that Thailand is far better off now under the Military than it was before the takeover.

At least there is some form of stability now ... before it was just kaos ...

Now there is control, which was needed to stop the unruly lawlessness and thuggery that existed when the red shirts were making trouble.

Thailand is far better now than before , and if you cannot see that then you need to see an eye doctor...

coffee1.gif I like many .... hope Prime Minister Prayuth stays in for a very long time .... he's the only one who can get this country back on it's feet.

and how would you know that to be true? poll results from the happiness folks over at Master Poll? cheesy.gif

Come on, the only people who think the country is better off under military rule are the ones cheering for the "intervention" in the first place. They're happy as pigs in a poke...

But you might recall that they are the minority... which is the reason that the Generals are their only path to power... They do not represent the majority of Thailand...

I, like many, hope that the army are thrown out of politics forever so that Thailand can become a normal country and live up to it's potential...

It would seem that the army uses "gun barrels" and politicians, particularly PTP (Thaksin parties) use 'cash barrels'. Coercion by any other name.

"At the last election, the Pheu Thai Party won some 48% of the popular vote, less than a majority. If, as a thought experiment, all votes obtained by Pheu Thai candidates through the exchange of some kind of reward for votes received were subtracted from the party’s total vote, what percentage of legitimate votes would it still have?

Quite probably the party would have far less than a majority, and so would fall short in democratically legitimating its leadership of Thailand. If Thailand is to move closer to rational/legal democratic practices, it needs to end money politics and validate the rule of law."

If most of the people support this government, they why the H___ are they even delaying the elections? They should have rushed it and get it over with. I know I would. So what gives? Is there something they are not telling us?

??

and the article continues by tearing apart the assertion that you quote above:

BP: This is a favorite of topic of those who oppose the government. Simply put, they argue, as Young argues above, that Thaksin and his parties are in power because of vote buying. Those votes don’t count and the government is illegitimate.

along with this somewhat longer section which describes how people take money, but vote the way they want to anyway... :

Nevertheless, one party not connected to the red shirts tried to capitalise on the easy democratic virtue of Bang Khen residents. A dozen or so campaigners from this big party made a single cursory visit to the slum areas. Small posters were distributed and many of these got fixed to dwellings.

This party was, however, more active when it came to seeking out residents to attend its campaign rallies. It recruited volunteers – some from adjacent government housing – for a highly-spirited session at North Bangkok University on June 10 at which Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva presided. A similar affair was staged at Rajabhat University on June 24 for a candidate from the big party. The event was presided over by Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra.

Sources say adults received 300 baht but the children were not compensated.

What did the canvasser give you?

He gave me 200 baht but I was expecting more.

What did the canvasser say when he handed you the 200 baht?

The canvasser only said the funds came from the XXXX party. He made no suggestion that I vote for them or anyone else.

Why did you vote for Pheu Thai when you were paid by another party?

Pheu Thai was my favourite.

So what was that point about vote-buying... ?

PT promises the earth and delivers nothing that does not benefit their faction of the elite.

Things to remember, I remember the bloodbath that was the war on drugs.

I remember the tak bai incident and all that has followed.

I remember the farmers not being paid and the near collapse of the rice industry.

I remember the abuse of parliamentary procedure to forward PT's benefactors agenda.

I remember the storm troopers of UDD and their violent intimidation of the lords and ladies of misrule opponents.

If things are so much better, and the PM has the support of the majority, why not hold an election?

Good question Thaksin!......the might of the ultra powerful elite...the RTA...the RTP.......they're totally sh*t scared of him!

However bad..or good he has been or done....I don't get it!!

They're sh*t scared of the fact that he has the support of the people.

Let's be frank. There's a major change coming. This bunch need to be in power when it happens, That way they reckon they are guaranteed to stay in power (that's where the analogy of the Thousand Year Reich really fits in). If the people have a say the risk that they lose power is too great. The stakes are as high as they get.
