Work resumes on Sukhumvit Soi 33-area drainage system

PATTAYA:--Construction of a new drainage system under Sukhumvit Soi 33 has restarted after a 45-day delay, with officials promising roads will reopen by Aug. 15.

The intersection of Soi 33 and Soi Nongyai has been closed since July 15 as workers lay new underground pipes to connect local drainage to the water-treatment plant on Soi Nongyai. Once treated, the water will be flushed into the canals in Naklua.

The project began in March, drawing complaints not only from motorists, but nearby street vendors and retailers about dust and detours.

The construction company made only limited concessions to traffic, opening a 2-meter-wide detour route accessible only by motorbikes.

Then, on June 1, all work stopped, leaving holes in roads and torn up pavement for six weeks.

Councilman Manoj Nongyai said the stoppage was necessitated by changes to the design plan so that all affected streets could be connected to the water-treatment plant.

Work resumed on July 15 and was slated to conclude on Aug. 15.

Nongyai apologized for the delay and inconvenience, but urged residents to be patient as the improvement in storm drainage will outweigh any temporary disruptions caused by construction.
