"Neither Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Sathiraphan Keyanont nor Pol Gen Kowit Wattana, the national police chief _ who eventually came together to form the Council for Democratic Reform _ were told in advance of the plot because they were seen as being close to Mr Thaksin.

When troops were actually moved out of their barracks for the coup, it was mistaken as a routine exercise and did not arouse suspicion among the so-called Class 10 officers loyal to Mr Thaksin.

Troops of the Second Cavalry Division commanded by Maj-Gen Sanit Prommat, the First Division under the command of Maj-Gen Prin Suwandhat and the Anti-Aircraft Division led by Maj-Gen Ruangsak Thongdee, all members of Class 10, were trapped in their barracks by troops and tanks from the Fourth Cavalry Battalion. The surprise siege also prompted Gen Trairong Intharatat, chief adviser to then Defence Minister Gen Thammarak Isarangkura na Ayudhaya, to go into hiding."

This goes to show you the fragile nature of a military coop, that one fraction of the army had to lock down another.

If it is the case that all divisions of the military were not in agreement on this coup d'état then there maybe some more infighting later on. I am not an expert on Thai culture but I would imagine Thaksin will not go down without a fight and may try to get back in power. Regardless, it is pretty amazing that the whole thing was bloodless with no loss of life.
