PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Nationalism is a double-edged sword.

It can be a positive force that helps unite people from both ends of the political spectrum and encourage them to make sacrifices for the betterment of the country and its citizenry.

It also gives them pride and motivates them to outdo other nations. In times of crises, nationalism helps people endure hardship and allows them to bring the country back on its feet again.

However, excessive nationalism can make people turn inwards. Unrealistic beliefs and emotions become the dominant force in shaping public opinion and influencing political decision-making process.

Moreover, scholars and policy makers are reluctant to give their honest assessment of an issue for fear of being falsely accused of lacking patriotism, or, even worse, selling their conscience for self-aggrandizement. In some cases, ultra-nationalism leads to violence and conflict.
