China agrees to buy 2 million tons of rice from Thailand

BANGKOK, 11 August 2015 (NNT) - The Chinese government has agreed to purchase two million tons of rice from Thailand through a government-to-government (G2G) deal.

Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikalaya said after visiting China that Thailand will deliver two million tons of rice over two years. The first million tons, which include Jasmine rice and other refined grains, will be sold at market price before the end of December.

The remaining rice will be put up for another round of G2G discussions around mid-September, when Chinese representatives visit Thailand.

As we all know, China is a huge country with an even huger population. Fact. China is unable to feed itself. But on another note, the Chinese are now very nervous about the standards of products made in China and this is across the board from milk formula to washing detergents.

Australia have very wisely climbed on the wagon and are now exporting to china massive amounts of fresh milk which demands high prices, but is constantly in short supply. There are Australian companies who have imported Australian standard animals such a cattle, and sheep into Mongolia and are doing very well thank you.

Seeing Thai rice on supermarket shelves in China is common, but what is also noticed is that the Thai rice seems to move of the shelves quicker than local rice.

So for my two cents worth, I think this deal is great for both countries.

Too obvious, and as the headline suggests, it is odd that the largest rice producing Country in the world enters a deal to secure 2 million tonnes of....rice.

If it smells off, involves the Chinese,IMO then it is fishy as pla ra.

In early-mid 2000's, China, the world's largest producer of steel, bought pretty much all the steel they could and drove the market through the roof. Anyone involved in the Construction Industry will remember this time when projects got delayed, suppliers had to re-write their invoices and the cost of anything containing a screw went up in price.

China helps Thailand with some excess rice stock piles, gets a good deal, will use it to manipulate the market somehow and expect them to later come back for the return favor.

You mean just like the amnesty the current rulers have granted themselves? You talk like as if the former government(s) had granted themselves amnesty that this would have been honored by subsequent administrations.

You DO know that the current rulers tore up the constitution and gave themselves god like powers, right? They can do anything they want.

The right way to "punish" the former administration would have been to defeat them in an election, and then the whole process of inquiries into the rice scheme (and other schemes) could have been started.

I still await anyone proving where this so called billions were meant to be stolen from or whether this represents figure larger than the norm in Thai politics.
