is it inadvisable to attempt to go to myanmar (mae sae or mae sot) with a 30 day visa exemption and expect to get a new 30 day exemption - i would prefer a visa run rather than going to the immigration office.

Mae Sot is a no.

Mae Sai is a maybe. There have been reports of Mae Sai turning people away if they had not gotten the 30 day extension at immigration.

Rather than Mae Sai going to Chiang Khong for a crossing to Laos might be a better choice.

You will not get 30 days at any border crossing unless you are from a G7 country.

It depends to vary day by day as to even being able to leave for a visa exempt entry.

There was a recent post by member that got one after getting the extension.

So what would happen if one was on the last day of one's extension, and they would not let you out?

Going on the last day in any case is not a good idea.

If on the last day and turned away you could go to an immigration office to get a a 7 day extension or make a hurried trip to the Chiang Khong crossing.

This may be a bit old story because this is what happened to a French guy at Ranong

on the last day of his 3rd or 4th 30-day visa-exempt stamp last September, but the

immigration officer charged him 1,900B for a 7-day extension when he got back to

Thailand from Myanmar and told him to leave the country within that week. He ended

up having to go all the way up to Vientiane to apply for a 60-day tourist visa and fly back

to Bangkok from there.

More like a strange story, because border offices (the one that you meet when "coming back" are not entitled to issue any extension of stay.

So for that to happen they would have to 1. escort him to the office, and 2. cancel his exit, which kind of impossible because eh had a Myanmar entry stamp.

The immigration office cannot tell what the border post will do. If you are eligible for an extension that is what you should get. Cost is Bt 1,900.

This is what he told me almost a year ago, not what happened to me.

What he said was when he left Ranong for Myanmar, the immigration

officer told him he couldn't come back to Thailand from a border run

again but that was the last day of his 30-day visa-exempt stamp, when

he couldn't even afford to go to any other border crossings before it

expired, he wasn't going to travel in Myanmar, either, so he had no

choice but to come back to Thailand through Ranong again, when the

immigration officer got him only 7 days to stay in Thailand which he had

to pay 1,900B for and told him to leave the country within the 7 days.

He didn't tell me he had to be escorted to the immigration office then.

Maybe he did. I don't know.

The point is he was able to come back to Thailand again from a border run,

even though he was told at first he wasn't allowed to, but got only 7 days to

stay in Thailand that he had to pay for. I don't think it very common, but he

was really upset when he was talking to me about it. I still remember this

like yesterday.

The immigration office in CM would advise you to apply for an extension that costs you 1,900B, I'd say.

If you really want to go for another visa-exempt stamp, Chiang Khong would be a good border post to

do so, as ubonjoe suggested.

as an update, I went to Chiang Kong Laos last week.

I got a new passport just over a year ago, I had only 2 Visa Exemption stamps on my passport

The thai Immigration officer on the way out counted my visas and said I would not be allowed back in for a Visa Exemption. Then he checked with his boss, and said it was ok this time, but not next time.

On the way back in, the same day, the woman at immigration counted all the days I had been in thailand and said I was not allowed into thailand. Then she spoke to her boss,, and he said it was ok this time, but I'd need a tourist visa next time

So maybe not just cambodia stopped the visa runs
