Thai police deactivate bomb in Bangkok house

Bangkok: Thai police said they had found and deactivated a bomb in the capital Bangkok on Monday, a week after an explosion killed 20 people in the city.

"We received reports this afternoon of a bomb in Sukhumvit 81. I went to check and found a wide bomb," Kamthorn Aucharoen, commander of the police's explosive ordnance team, told Reuters, referring to a road off of one of Bangkok's main thoroughfares.

Perhaps he meant a "wired" bomb? not a "wide" one wai2.gif

I very tried - read bat news too mut

They said the leads had gone cold - but this discovery would have been the best source of info that could get.

Finger prints, witnesses, clothing, source of materials etc

I am also interested to know what they mean by a "wide bomb".

Finding it in a house is significant if this is somehow related to the incident of last Monday. The house will certainly have a "paper trail"... who owns it, who rents it, who has been seen coming and going, who and what else is in the house, and lots of other factors that a competent investigation team could go to work on instead of hassling random farangs.

How would the Police know that a bomb is inside a house ?

and why no information about how they magically happened to search a home and found a bomb.

at least it should say an ''annonymous tip-off'.

Many possible scenario's here. What about that it is linked to the Erawan bomber or accomplice that fled their condo or whatever after pics were published and landlord let themselves in ?

Btw. that particular scenario has happened before in other countries.

The Latest: Bangkok police say grenade unlinked to bombing
The Associated Press

BANGKOK (AP) — The latest on the bombings in the Thai capital (all times local):

__

3 p.m.

Police say a construction worker found a grenade buried in land near a major Bangkok road, but they believe it is unrelated to last week's bombing that killed 20.

Lt. Sakon Rungkiatpaisarn of Pra Kanong Station said the grenade was found as in a lot on Sukhumvit 81 being prepared for construction on Monday morning. He said they don't know where it came from, but it was unlikely to be linked to the pipe bomb that blew up at a major intersection in the middle of Bangkok.

Sakon said a squad was sent to defuse the grenade.

___

2 p.m.

The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand has expressed dismay at the detention of a Hong Kong journalist for carrying body armor and a helmet.

Hok Chun Anthony Kwan, who was assigned by Initium Media Technology to cover the aftermath of last week's bombing in central Bangkok, was stopped at the Thai capital's international airport on Sunday when authorities found a flak jacket and helmet in his carry-on luggage before he boarded a flight to Hong Kong.

He is being charged with possessing an illegal weapon, which carries a prison sentence of up to five years.

"Body armor and helmets used by journalists are not offensive weapons and should not be treated as such," the FCCT said in a statement Monday. Bullet proof jackets are considered military equipment in Thailand, whose laws prohibit their possession without a license. However, the law is almost never enforced and journalists have openly worn body army during recent political turmoil in the country.

___

12:30 p.m.

Thailand's police chief says the investigation into last week's bomb blast has been hampered by broken security cameras in central Bangkok along the main suspect's getaway route.

National police chief Somyot Poompanmoung said Monday that police were trying to "put pieces of the puzzle together" but had to use their imagination to fill holes where street-side security cameras were broken and unable to record the suspect's movements.

Somyot said, "Sometimes there are 20 cameras on the street but only five work."

He added, "We have had to waste time to put the dots together."

Last Monday's bombing at the Erawan Shrine in central Bangkok left 20 people dead and more than 120 injured.

Police have released an artist's sketch of the prime suspect who is seen on security footage leaving a backpack at a bench inside the open-air shrine and walking away. The explosion takes place 15 minutes later.

On Sunday, Somyot said that police would "need some luck" to track down the suspect, while other police officials said they believed he had already left the country.

Sounds like a half-baked story to me.They would be stupid enough to buy it though, they can't imagine that anyone else wouldn't. Children with adult toys.

How did they manage to get a wide bomb down a narrow soi?

Just re read, it should be wired. smile.png

This is all beginning to play out like a Pink Panther sketch. Perhaps if the BiB had people in power actually qualified to do their job instead of buying their way in then maybe, just maybe, they might be closer to solving the case.

They received reports that there was a bomb in the house? From who and why? Well I feel so much more confident that the police are keeping us safe from terrorist now. clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gif They are never going to solve this unless they get international help from the FBI or someone. Time to swallow their pride and let the grown ups take care of this one now.

So, the Thai Police Chief admits to creative blagging to solve high-profile crimes - why am I not surprised?

If you put it there you know where it is, isn't it ? A classic distraction which will now give them the clues to arrest a string of people which will confess to all the bombs and problem solved. The fact that the wrong people go to jail is irrelevant.

Isn't the answer in the article?
