‘Bored’ of Advice of the West, Hun Sen Praises His Own Leadership
PHNOM PENH— Prime Minister Hun Sen addressed a dinner of powerful businessmen Saturday night, claiming he could be a “professor” to Western leaders, who are beginning to bore him with their advice.

Hun Sen said his policies have moved Cambodia from a “planned economy” to a free-market one after decades of civil war, making it an attractive place for investors.

“I am really proud of the policies of the party, as well as my leadership, which has been responsible for the executive body for over 30 years,” Hun Sen told the attendant tycoons. “I understood clearly that you all would deposit your money abroad or would use your money to buy homes abroad, ignoring investments here.”

Instead, his policies have grown the wealthy class, increasing business activities, Hun Sen said. This has made him “bored” with advice from countries of the West, he said. That includes the outgoing US ambassador, William Todd.

“I met with the US ambassador before he left Cambodia,” Hun Sen said. “When he was talking with me, he talked a lot about change. I then said to him: ‘Don’t forget whom you are talking with. Your Excellency is truly talking with a professor who can teach you or the president of your country or other prime ministers on change.’”

The man is a legend in his own minds..... that's what happened when you crown yourself to be

an autocratic ruler....

He certainly changed - from being a member of a ruthless gang that murdered and tortured millions of innocent people after seizing power and vowing to build a socialist utopia into a ruthless dictator who abuses HR's and any who dare oppose him whilst building a capitalist state that benefits himself, family and friends.

Quite the chameleon - and survivalist.

It's his party and he can cry if he wants to...

still embarrassing, though, being drunk and coked out (the usual inducement for stupidity)

We keep hearing about how bad it is from people who do not live there. Spent 6 months there. For a person who needs fast Internet and easy and clear visa rules, yes it is great.

Thais could make money there, as the food is not as good as Thailand. Why aren't the Thais there making some money ?

It ranks #75 in personal freedoms where Thailand ranks #86.

There's my opinion and then there are the wrong ones!

Isn't it they have their own opinion, but they don't agree with it?

Hmmm... or is it as one person I heard put it, "When I want your opinion... I'll give it to you!"

Ask the striking garment workers what a nice guy he is. Like all dictators he has a ready made work force for sale. They will work for a little money(and kickbacks for him) and he has the army to back him up like a lot of Asian countries. A dictatorship under the disguise of democracy.

Clearly taking PR lessons from Donald Trump.

Are you talking of the same Donald that is shaking up American politics and leading in the popularity polls. He keeps handing his opponents their heads on a platter. His opponents do not know what to make of him he is using his own money he is not getting down on his hands and knees postulating and kissing the Koch brothers ring. Some opponents are even stealing pages from his play book. 40,000 babies were born last year to rich overseas people that wanted their children to have US citizenship. They reside at toney hotels set up especially for this purpose and then they asked the taxpayer to pay for the birth as well. They pleaded poverty. They finally showed on TV the authorities moving in and closing them down. 400,000 babies were born last year to illegals in the USA. All figures courtesy of Faux news. Years of bending the rules and looking the other way plus big business looking for cheap labor have created this mess. The Donald is the only one addressing it the rest are wringing their hands not knowing what to do.

Every nation, no matter what others' opinions may be, has the sovereign right to run their country however they want.

Others do not have to adopt their economy, lifestyle, way of life, political or social structures.

If I don't like a country, I won't live there, but the West has been in love with themselves so long they have forgotten that others can live however they want.

Sure, I criticize people, but Western leadership has had a standing policy of interference for far too long.

This standing policy is not based on human rights, freedom or whatever spin they are putting on it this week.

It is, was and will be policy based on greed, a scramble for resources, and petty egotistical temper tantrums that have no place on the world stage.

People used to say live and let live. Now they say, might makes right, and praise the Lord and pass the hand grenades.

It is truly disgusting.

I think what HS was thinking boils down to "ah yes, here's the latest American Ambassador telling me all about change in Cambodia yet again, must be about the 10th one since I've been PM or have I missed someone?".

He could indeed lecture many a politician or diplomat about "change" and how to cope with it because he's been doing so for 30 years and remains, still, in power in a democracy. Not many who can say that really.

Now, before those of you whose spittle is already making your keyboards slippery, this is not an ode to HS nor is his continuance in power something that I approve of or revel in. It's just fact. He's played more politicians from Thailand, the USA and elsewhere than anyone I can think of and look! He's still there and still at it. Why wouldn't you want to be lectured on Machiavellian politics by the day's leading practitioner?
