Fishermen report large catches off Krabi after local gulf reopens to commercial fishing

KRABI, 27 August 2015 (NNT) Fishermen in Krabi were able to catch about 10 tons of fishes thanks to the officials' program to partially seal off the provincial sea, which has allowed the local maritime environmental resources to recover.

Chief of the Andaman Sea Fishery Management Center in Krabi, Charoenchai Srisuwan, visited a fish market in Muang District and inquired fishing crew in the area about the recent fishery situation. The fishermen unanimously told him that they spotted a large volume of fishes in the southern waters off the Samed Island.

They spent 3 hours trawling and was able to catch about 10 tons of fishes worth about one million baht. The fishermen credited their successful catches to local authorities’ campaign that seals off waters every year for the increased amount of maritime resources.

Meanwhile, Mr. Charoenchai reaffirmed that Krabi's waters do not allow illegal fishing vessels. All of the trawlers possess legal documents. He attributed the large catches made by the fishermen to direct results of the annual campaign to seal off the gulfs of Krabi and Phang Nga for 3 months from April to June.

He said strict rules against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing have also contributed to the increased population of maritime resources in the waters.

This is great news. 90 days is too long, may be good for Eco system, probably Fishermen can survive with tourism Income in Thailand, but not in other countries.

India closes East Coast up to Andaman Sea for 45 days commercial fishing from past 5 years from Mid April-End of May. It works very well as well.

Another important thing to be noticed is Thai Fishermen don't use the nets size according to the UN norms. So, their catch is more with small fishes, which is kind of commercial exploitations.

By eating Fishes more often we are also committing and encourage the crime. Better to reduce fish consumption or eat Pink fish(Thaptim) grown from fresh water forms.

Its not rocket science is it?

They deserve the nobel price

Fish all the year with illegal nets which takes out the baby fishes: no one catch much and all is small.

Give the nature some time to recover and let the small fish get bigger and breed: you can catch more and bigger fishes.

Who would have thought that? Complete unexpected results giggle.gif

From the report here 90 days seem just perfect.

But maybe twice a year 60 days would be better?

At survive: during that brake the boats don't need diesel, don't need staff and there are anyway some downtimes for service which be made during these 90 days.

100% agree on the net size, it should be even bigger than the UN norms. It is just stupid to catch the small fish and sell them as animal feed or even throw them back (dead) into the sea, if they could grow in a short time to a very expensive fish.

Why do they have to fish all year to make a living?

I lived on the west coast of Canada. Commercial fisherman have a maximum of 3 months every year to catch all the fish for the year. Different areas at different times during that 3 months. Some areas open for as little as 12 hours to allow fishing. I fished one year on a friends boat. We were out 2 months total and the boat made over $150,000 in 2 months. Can make enough money in 2 months and also catch enough fish to supply so why fish all year.

Why do they not simply open different areas at different times like crop rotation?

Well, different areas at different times may mean that these areas are than complete full with boats and nothing living will remain....

yes they don't need to fish all the year, but they want.....

The lawmakers of the past were quite happy to rob the Thai population of their education, and a acceptable standard of living, why would you expect those leaches who would suck a country to dry even consider the conservation of ocean life and wild life in general/

Check ownership of the unregistered trawlers and those using undersize mesh on nets and then slap them DOWN hard and you will see real inprovenment on size and volume of catch. The ivory destruction was like a medicine man show, there has to be more to come to gain a audience who will help support / finance you.
