Low cost housing draws great interest from the poor

BANGKOK: -- The government's low-cost housing project or "Ban Youngyuen " drew thousands of low-income earners to scramble for rights to own condominium rooms and houses when it was first launched for reservations.

People flocked to the National Housing Authority head office before dawn as supply is far short of demand and those who come first will have better chance for the rooms and houses with starting price of just 200,000 baht, affordable for low income earners to purchase on an installment basis.

Some came as early as 4 am although official business hours started at 8.30 am..

The NHA opened the Ban Youngyuen housing project for reservation for the first time since the military take-over, and this was in response to the government’s scheme to enable the poor to have their own houses, and to improve their livelihood.

All low-income earners are eligible for the scheme.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew presided over the launching ceremony of the low-cost housing scheme.

Each housing unit under the scheme is up sale from 242,000 baht with reservation fee of 1,000 baht and installment of 1,500 baht per month.

Reservation for rooms and houses under the scheme is opened until September 6 at the National Housing Authority head office from Monday to Sunday.

I hope the government is really committed to this. That requires upkeep, maintenance, provision for security and quality management. Unfortunately, these are sorely lacking in the private sector's housing projects as well.

These are issues post ownership transfers, and are not on the mind of the developer. They are issues to be addressed by the committees of the joint owners, and as seen in most low cost housing estates, are poorly addressed due either to mismanagement or apathy of the co-owners.

This cannot happen because the TVF minority PM bashers are always saying that he has done nothing. ha ha

Anyway Hope the blue book is in the name of the applicant--tied in with their ID and work. With no private greedy sod on the bandwagon.

Used be called "Houses from the King"

Been building them for the last 20 years all over the country.

Nothing new here.

No connection with Prayut or the Junta.

This particular operation was planned and building started under the Yingluck government.

Unless you think Prayut managed the whole thing from start to finish in less than 18 months.

If post 9 is correct that the yingluck government planned and started building this project, i would have several reservations about proper buildng codes being followed, sand, cement, rock mistures, etc.

It seems everything that group was connected to went tits up, corrupution rampant, shoddy work, and other materials below standard, etc.

This type of project has been attempted around the world, some were / are succssful, many were not, they were stripped of anything of resale value in a few months and have been vacent eyesores for years. upkeep is the big problem it would seem and many become druggers operating bases and those workers with family are driven out.

Humans seem to take care of what they have to work for not what they get free or nearly free. A strong police presence was one suggestion that seemed to result in a better success ratio. Hope it works as everyone needs shelter from the elements.

if thats the case then nothing to do with yingy either, just an ongoing project started before she was in office.

Unless, as per my post above, she encouraged the projects....and encouraged her friends to buy.

What's the bet some ChineseThai gets half of his kids to line up, secure a house each, and then rents them out?

So true! The same sort of thing happens the world over, though. I'm from the UK and the government started a similar scheme called 'Right to buy' designed to help people buy their first home. This year they were forced to admit that 40% of the homes were being let out on the expensive private rental market. Even worse, some of these flats were being sublet at up to seven times the cost of the average social rents. I doubt even Thai-Chinese would price-gouge that badly: it would be like letting out a 1,500baht/month room for 7,500baht/month.

Maintenance is an unknown word in Thailand. That why their helicopters falling down every time its rainy weather, also why Thai Airways will be banned from European air-space.-.

Yes, but were they not for rent???

Somehow I feel these will develop into slums because owners will fail to pay their maintenance fees, and greedy/crooked management companies getting their foot in the door.
