BANGKOK: -- Police have arrested a gunman who confessed to killing former night-entertainment tycoon Somyot Suthangkool. The suspect will be presented to the press Thursday.

A police source said Wednesday that Panupong Rassana, 32, confessed that he was hired to kill Somyot, 62, by a man to whom the late tycoon owed "a lot of money".

Panupong reportedly said that he was initially hired to collect the debt, but then the man changed his mind and ordered Somyot's killing instead.

Wow...these Thai criminals sure do get things backwards sometimes.

The credo of the loan shark is supposed to be: "Kill the guy who owes you $1,000 to send a message to the guy who owes you $10,000.".

Not the other way around.

Kill a guy who owes you millions??..... that's just plain dumb.

BANGKOK: -- POLICE HAVE arrested a man who confessed to killing night-entertainment tycoon Somyot Suthangkool on June 29.

A police source claimed yesterday that Panupong Rassana, 32, confessed that he was hired to kill Somyot, 62, by a man to whom the late tycoon owed "a lot of money".

Panupong reportedly said that he was initially hired to collect the debt, but then the man changed his mind and ordered Somyot's killing instead.

Panupong reportedly told police that he rented a room in Bangkok's Ram-Indra area two days before the shooting, and after someone delivered a gun to him on the day itself, he took a taxi to the Hua Mark area, where he was met by the getaway motorcyclist. They then waited for Somyot outside a restaurant in Suan Luang district, before shooting him dead and dropping the gun in the Chao Phraya River, he said.

Panupong was arrested in his home in Soi Charansanitwong 35 in Taling Chan district on Tuesday.

Following Somyot's fatal shooting at the restaurant parking lot, police investigators mulled over several possible motives, including a conflict over a Bt4-million gambling debt and his work in clearing lawsuits for defendants. Police also issued warrants for the arrest of a male shooter and a male getaway motorcyclist, based on sketches.

The source said enhanced CCTV camera footage and the escape route later led police to Panupong, whose appearance matched the witnesses' description of the gunman.

Police have interrogated him to determine the identity of the mastermind and the motive, the source said. The information given to police by Panupong could lead to his accomplices, including the getaway motorcyclist and the person who hired them, the source said.

BANGKOK: -- The gunman who shot cafe entertainment boss Somyos Sutangura, 62, dead confessed he was paid 300,000 baht to shoot him.

Panupong alias Jae Rasana, 32, was arrested yesterday after investigation linked him to be part of the team hired to shoot Somyos on June 29 after he was walking to his car parked at a restaurant where he and his wife had dinner on Pattanakarm road.

Police established three motives of his murder, debts from gambling, land dispute, and business conflict.

The gunman said he was paid by an “Ajarn” and was also given his photo before taking the job.

He said on the day of the shooting, he was also told where the cafe boss was at and the colour of his dress.

He said named three other accomplices, including the motorcyclist who rode him to the restaurant to shoot and escaped.

He said the gun used in the shooting was arranged by his payer and after the shooting, he threw it into the Chao Phraya river.

Police were hunting for the three accomplices and the mastermind who they said would be known soon.
