I must go to Ubon Ratchathani for a two weeks on business. Who can give me the scoop on expat bars or meeting places if any? Or what to do there after dark.

I have been there a few times but just for one or two days and not looking forward to two weeks there. All info on Ubon is much appreciated, thanks.

Sorry to miss your post,,

have to say not so much to do in Ubon,, few places where ppl are going, swing bar in the Chayakoon road opposite Kasikorn Bank.

There is also NEW farang owned joint called N-JOY, bit hard to find but if you know where is the prison is close by, no inmates hang out thouth...really nice place, decorated with taste, food is good, it's small and you find good english\thai menu and all the drinks u can image.

Nice hotels are Laithong

http://www.laithonghotel.net

not cheapest but nice, have pool and buffee breakfast & Lunch cost 149THB each

also few other hotels like NEVADA Grand, rooms as far i can remeber from 900 up, large rooms, food i cant recomend, but i was there last time eating abt 3yrs ago, they have done lot of face lift, so it might be better now.

you can always IM me, when u r here and we can have coffee...im in town most of the days now since my bike is up and running again

and ofcourse Ubon Bike weekend on 24-25, you are welcome.

Don't stay at the Pathumrat hotel, one of the dodgiest shithole hotel i've ever had the misfortune to see in Thailand, lots of mafia - types hanging around. Laithong and Nevada are ok.

Marco, that place on soi 9 was very nice also for eating out but i can't remember the name of it? It was not far from Makro I think from memory. There's also a good restaurant on the same road as Lai Thong virtually opposite called Jumpa Hom or something sounding like that.

now that Ubon is getting more busy these days it could do with a good website and/or newspaper for people to advertise their bsuinesses both Thai and Farang. A portal site for listing companies, restuarants and hotels etc.. At the moment it seems to be word of mouth until the place expands more in a few years.

thos guys from Mai pen rai where there and nice lads, big and ugly and all of them with huge Harleys...

I think your bike is trying to tell you something you know! Maybe it is time to lose some weight if your tyre is suffering under the strain of extra Lbs. Ha Ha. :o

I feel sorry for your bike now. You've painted a vision of the tyre letting out an ulmightey fart and BANG from the engine as the burning hot metal grinds to a halt. I picture a trail of cars in the night following what they believe is a wounded buffalo hit by a car home as the cars crawl slowly into the distance behind you. Was there smoke coming from the brakes, a wineing from the engine at high revs and seat touching the back wheel as suspension gives out under the strain of every bump in the road. And the conversation going on in the cars behind in Thai must be "Have you seen the size of that guys ass on that bike. His arse is hanging over each side of the bike kissing chain one side and kick stand the other". The courage that bike must have to get you back home safely is testament to anyone wishing to purchase a virago. The bike not only has guts but heart to march on when the going gets tough.

You know i'm only kidding right!. Ha Ha. Just taking to p... mate. Ha Ha :o

Cheers. Jay

Do you have a good local bike mechanic who can sort out the problem. You probably know where to take the bike for repairs, the road side shops are usually reasonable on cost. I had our old honda moped overhauled/serviced with new exhaust system and new wheels and for very little money just a few thousand and the bike is as good as new now. Our bike is much smaller though its only a 125cc not as big as your virago. However, if you have really kicked the bike into moon river then it doesn't matter anyhow.... Cheers.

Ubon's great :o

Check out WrongWay Cafe.

http://www.wrongwayhome.com/Wrong_Way_Cafe...ng_Way_Cafe.htm

Also, The Rock is fun, though not an expat place. Near the Nevada Grand Hotel.

There's a pretty good list by Ampher down the bottom of this page http://www.legacygym.com/ubon1.htm of things to see in the province, if you have time on the weekends or whatever.

I agree Bellatrix, Ubon is great (it's the people who make it ha ha).

I have stayed in Pathumrat a few times, no complaints, just a typical slightly run-down mid range (1200?) hotel - mafia days are long gone I think.

Marco, I know you get bored here but really I never have enough time to do everything I want...

Jay, yes, a couple of nice places just near the Laithong, the one you mentioned and another just near it. Hanza just down from Wrong Way also can be quite nice to sit outside in the evening.

See you all soon I hope :D

Marco, next time you decide to break down so close to my house, make sure I am home first !!

Jay, I love Pha Taem - hot for me when I walk round the "loop" to see the paintings, but not for the girls sitting under a tree at the top with snacks from the vendors :D

Posted

hi mike

that loop is exhuasting at pha taem. I thought i was going to collapse every time you see a sign 3kms to exit, 2kms to exit and 1kms to exit it seems never to end. Very embarrasing the day i was there 'cause when walking looking at the rock paintings a had a bad stumach and broke wind (fa*t*d) by accident and you know what.....it actually echoed around the cave three times. My wife could not walk for laughing as i did not know there were chinese tourists further back behind following. This is a true story my wife was disgusted but all i could think was wow i bet in a thousand years that's never happened before! Sorry but i had to share that......

I visited there in Nov 06. Was dumb enough to let my missus persuade me to have a look at the place. When we went to check in the staff there couldn't stop gawping (maybe the shock of seeing a thai/farang couple who are actually the same age, I'm 28, the missus 27). When the porter was leading us to the room I noticed a couple of shady characters hanging around the corridors. The room looked like it hadn't been renovated since the vietnam war and didn't reflect the 1300 baht a night price tag. My instincts told me not to stay there, it just didn't feel safe and my wife agreed.

BTW - I heard a new entertainment complex "Sunee Tower" was *coming soon* (i.e 2020) - any news on this?

Sunee tower,, all 5 fllors,,, i thin 2020 is bit too fast, as they haev been doing and marketing that for Officer spaces last 2yrs or so....

entertainment complex,, i think never,, BUT NEVADA is Upgrading and constructions should be finished with i a yr(Hope so)....

Regarding Pathumrat hotel and some other hotels in town, i ahev been booking to my friends,, most of them are low life hotels but they are normal for Ubon standard, and surpricingly that hotel is FULLY booked almost every weekend but have to say most of them are thais,,, LAITHONG is more so called high class in ubon, but bit far from "so called" center...

And there is other hotel toh sang hotel that is on the way to Prison,,,just incase missed the hotel im sure they can accomodate in the slammer /brik as well,,,, Toh Sang hotel i was looking for rooms last time few yrs back and personally did not like them as they where very dark....

other that that Ubon has nothing much from hotel side...

Normally when in Ubon I stay in Nevada. Large rooms (1000b), clean, nice swimmingpool, and in walking distance from central Ubon. (especially other nightspots) Breakfast and lunch is nothing special.

How ever there is a good terrace restaurant outside open in the evenings, with good food, cold beer and sport events on big screen.!

Ubon's largest disco/nightclub - The Rock is in the basement and have live entertainment (I think) every day. There is also a music pub, a Singasong pub, a snooker hall, karaoboxes, 2 supermarkets, internetshop, and several cinemas in the same complex! When the new plaza is finished, it will be even better.

The Laithong(1200b) in my opinion is not any better, but they have a nice breakfast and lunch buffet. The Jumpa Hom restaurant 100 meters west by the traffic light is a very nice place to dine. Opens 5 pm/1700. Some pubs and night spots in the same street, but a little bit out of centre.

The Tohsang(1200B?) have just been renovated with different style in each room, and is supposed to be good, but also a bit away from the main street.

The Ubonburi(1200B?) on the south side of Mun river is probably the most idyllic hotel, with rooms in the main block, and bungalows placed around a swimmingpool in a nice lush garden. Transport is needed unless you like to stay within the hotel area.

Cannot say much about Pathumrat, other than the infamous Long Beach Massage, and The Felize sing a song/karaoke, is just outside.

Plenty of other smaller and cheaper places spread around the city, but have to be reviewed by others.

There are plenty of restaurants to explore, but many of them only open in the evening.
