Bangkok's New Airport To Change The Face Of Seedy Pattaya

Why would more people come to Pattaya just because the airport is 30 minutes closer??? do they look at the travel brochure and say" ooh! look, lets go to Pattaya instead of .......... it's only 1hour 30 mins to the beach instead of 2 hours ummmm??

I think exactly the same.

Wishfull thinkings have made prices rocketing.Everybody wants a piece of the expected "families-retired-wealthy cake"

But to attract these people the city has not only advantages

Polluted beach and sea;crime rate;crazy traffic ;no pedestrian facilities;water shortages;etc etc etc

I fear there will be a lot of desillusion in the coming years in the area

I couldn't agree more with the above comments. Pattaya is a shithole and if developers want to take advantage of the new airport they should start new in another beach area that's close to the airport but doesn't have such a seedy legacy.

Times Square 42nd Street in NYC was sleazier than Pattaya could ever been when I was a kid.

Now it has been taken over by the corporations and is a tourist haven.

That never even seemed possible

Back to an earlier point.

The family friendly Koh Chang and dream beaches, Kayaking and snorkelling etc.

I prefer Pattaya and not because of sex tourism etc.

Koh Chang. After about 3 days I am bored with kayaking and snorkelling and the small option of other amenities. I am also completely fed up with the Mosquitoes and it is potentially Malarial there.

I will never go back as I could not wait to leave. After a short time on a reasonably nice beach and then an evening/night covered in Mosquitoe repelant and looking for something to do other than eat/drink or watch a video night after night.

Boring, biten to death and my idea of hel_l, not paradise. Maximum stay should be 1 week for the beach/relaxing type and that is 1 week too much for me.

Never again!!!

Gents there is an Asian perspective to the airport and Pattaya's future. Deregulation is the order of the day across the region and when ( as it will ) the dawn of cheap, well run charter flights hit the like of Hong Kong, the proximity of Patters coupled with the fantastic golf courses will pack em in. HK is one hour in front of LOS, and the golf crowd do not necessarily have to stay down town with Mabprachan say only 50 mins from the new airport, six o'clock flight from HK will get you into the area by nine. Leaving the office Friday back Sunday after two full days of golf and a trip or two into town for the 19th hole (s ), is an attractive proposition. Add to that the longer term chance of a casino/race track and the future is not as glum as it may seem, and also not dependant solely sex driven tourism.

Most of these women are over 18, but he says that young teenage girls walk the streets looking for customers, while underage boys are offered up as 'masseuses'.

I along with 99.9% of people abhor paedophilia, but I personally have never seen it being touted around the streets of Pattaya.

I would love somebody to take one of these NGO spokesmen to task about showing evidence when making statements like this. If they could actually provide evidence I am sure the police would arrest the perpretrators and the problem would cease to exist, and the reputation of Pattaya would eventually improve also.

But unfortunately these people never actually seem to be very good at providing evidence, just good stories.

Oh and by the way, IMHO,.........30 mins closer is not going to bring in Thousands of more tourists

Come on, john 101! Do you go ask the girls how old they are? Do you ask the boy "masseuses" how old they are? People do provide evidence and the police do make arrests.

Tammi,

I have read a few of your posts and I am sorry but you really do appear to be in the wrong country.

But I digress, as Brit said, asking a European to guess the age of a Thai is a very difficult thing to do!

Oh and by the way I would not make a habit of going around asking boys or girls how old they are as I am sure someone like you would probably try to get me locked up !

Have a nice day :o:D

Well I pray all that has been said comes to frusion we really need a lift in dodge city and may we start with city hall and get the infrastructure under way, god its needed, and fast. We could start on the plastc bags, get rid of them.... I am sure big c would have a few ideas, or would they?? :o

Big C is opening a megastore on Beach road at Soi 9.

Their idea is more plastic bags. More traffic.

As for more tourists coming here?

To shop and go to 5-star hotels?

Spend more money?

Most tourists spend a day or two in bangkok, see the temples and then head to their destinations in the North or a beach. Pattaya is not koh phi phi and never will be. Not matter how many 5-star resort open.

Pedophiles are looking for pre-pubesant children. That is pretty much all they are interested in and that is what paedophilia is about.

Children of this age are pretty easy to spot and I have NEVER been approached by one or by anyone pimping them in all my years in Thailand. Claiming that child prostitutes are common here is an self-serving urban myth that fills NGOs coffers, but has no basis in reality. :D

I see it was time for the semi-annual "Pattaya is family-oriented travellers" story to eminate from TAT, with the new twist this time being it will be changed because of the new airport.

:D

This nonsense never ceases to be dull, boring, and repetitive, not to mention dishonest.

Oh well, will await the next report in six months about how the beaches are all clean...the "legit" tourists numbers are up... and other assorted BS from the TAT.

Suggest a few planners read the Tipping Point

Interesting passage on how New York was cleaned up to become what it is today.

The mayor of NY looked at the murder and mayhem on the streets and on looking past all that saw that the town was visually depressed and un inviting. It was an eye sore and so he decided to make it more appealing. His vision worked and people took pride in the city and now it is a proud city.

His solution was to simply get rid of all the grafitti - every train bus wall etc all cleaned. Not one train could leave the station with grafitti on it, not one wall had paint on it for more than a few hours, etc. In 12 months it worked

the Pattaya bars etc have very little to do with it - as every city has them -people can go or leave them alone. However seperate them from the restaurant areas.

my suggestions for making Pattaya Jomtien a more visually appealing place to bring the family:

1. get rid of the black fume belching baht buses - creators of most of the pollution and the traffic jams - use the red and green buses.

2. Enforce the traffic laws - no driving or parking on the wrong side of the road - no pathetically drunk people driving - no food hawkers on motor bike on the wrong side of the road - no 8 year olds driving motor bikes - no mobile discos driving past shaking the foam of my beer

3. Clean up the unbelievable mess on the beach - plastic, bottles, junks

4. round up all the stray dogs - in 2 blocks in Jomtien beach road there are more than 50 dogs onthe beach and they are scabby, ugly dogs - when eating lunch on the beach one is surrounded by these sick looking pathtic dogs

5. enforce noise pollution laws and impose them on 24 hour karaoke bars with only one drunk customer whos not buying

Number 1 will be hard as the baht bus mafia will dig in

however the others are not difficult and would be an ideal revenue raiser for the police.

But I cant see anything happeneing now or in the future

Bangkok's new airport to change the face of seedy Pattaya

PATTAYA: -- For many tourists, the Thai resort of Pattaya conjures up images of criminals on the run, girls enticing westerners into sleazy bars, and most disturbingly, child sex tourism.

Pattaya was once a quiet fishing town, but the arrival of US soldiers on leave during the Vietnam war soon put an end to that, with go-go bars and brothels sprouting up to cater for company-starved GIs.

[/color]Aw bologna - Pattayahas always been a place to grab a cheap beer and a piece of p^%$sy unless you go way back before 1962

Tourist authorities are now hoping the resort will undergo another transformation, from sleazy sex destination into family-friendly beach town.

They stand a better chance of dividing Jom Tien from Pattaya.

But there are worries that Pattaya's seedy side may not disappear, instead vanishing behind the closed doors of plush new hotels and apartment blocks.

Well, of course they will, just like "Hooker Heaven" at the Hilton in Hua Hin

"In central areas of the city, a profusion of bars host young women who engage in sexual acts for payment," he says.

And, Of course this is illegle?

Most of these women are over 18, but he says that young teenage girls walk the streets looking for customers, while underage boys are offered up as 'masseuses'.

So.....They KNOW where they are and when they will be there but they don't wipe it out with a massive raid??

"The proliferation of foreign-owned or rented apartments can make child sexual abusers harder to detect, as instead of abusing children in bars or hotels, they are now able to do so in their own homes," he says.

Really?? Staying in 1 place with your name on the bills and paperwork is harder to monitor than moving from place to place??

Good to know what can confuse these ignorant police.

All tourism officials and hotel owners say they are committed to getting rid of child sex tourism, but concede that the wider adult entertainment industry attracts a lot of people.

So... for the right amount of cash you can still sleep with kids in their places??

"Another kind of tourist wants entertainment and relaxation," says TAT's Chaiwat. "As long as it is not illegal they can come and enjoy life, that's fine for me, it is not dirty, it's normal."

Would this be that guy everybody has seen walking the beach with a 2 ton beached freakin whale that he just couldn't leave at home while he prowled for babes(ies)?

Along the beachfront, where mostly British tourists clad in football shirts, shorts and the obligatory sunburn enjoy the baking weather, holiday-makers agree that Pattaya is a fun destination.

Nuff said there. England is the ONLY country where I've ever seen Golf Holigans.

"I think it has got something for everyone. It's good for families, it's good for young lads like me," says Michael Johnson, 23, an entrepreneur from Britain.

You need to take this young lad home.

But most tourists agree that Pattaya is not appropriate for children.

They earn the most money per person there. Now that you've retched or licked your lips - IF you go to Pattaya you will notice that the later the time, the younger the people are that are trying to sell you crap. Only you have been changing the :Flower Girl" into 'fair sexual game'.

"In our hotel they let guys come back with boys or girls," says Karen Yeo, 47, from the UK.

"In Our Hotel"... Does this mean you own and profit from it or are mearly making a judgmentele call??

Aoife Lowe, a 27-year-old recent graduate from Ireland, says that if she had children, she would not bring them to Pattaya.

Then what the F*#K is she doing there on her own??

"Pattaya is like Disneyland, but you don't pay an entrance fee," he says. — AFP

Yea but the "E" Ticket rides don't have a height or age limit requierment, just a finacial 1.

Regarding the shortened journey for existing frequent visitors.

There,s another way to look at this in a positive way which we have overlooked and is a definite plus.

It,s 30 mins. less to get to whatever brings us to Pattaya and it,s multitude of attractions in the first place.

Just imagine what you can do in that time and not having to wait 2 whole hours to achieve it. :o

The vibrancy and all it,s diverse sense of fun that we come back for time and time again is now only one and a half hours away. yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

As for the parent who brought his young son there, i find it hard to believe you didn,t know about the place being more suitable for adults.

Even if you didn,t you must have got the message pretty quickly and should have taken him to a more suitable area.

They are not hard to find you know and very interesting for children, if that,s what you truly came for.

The local bible enthusiasts come to mind here who pretend it,s on the up and fast becoming a 5 star resort.

Along with a certain local English newspaper where you,ll find the same old faces thinking this is fast becoming some sort of upper class resort.

Each to his own but the real Pattaya is the one for many of us, so please don,t over do it all you tea and bicky brigate who feel negative towards us.

Don,t forget where most of the support for your well deserving charities that we willingly contribute to comes from by the way when you are thinking less about us, while forgetting how decent we all really are.

Perhaps a move to a more suitable resort would be ideal for you who are easily shocked and wish to live the old colonial style of life.

How,s about Singapore or certain areas of Malaysia and you won,t have to rid them of the decent, hard working residents and visitors that keep Pattaya alive year after year. :D

In my humble opinion as always.

Pattaya if you wish is an ADULT disneyland and that,s the way it always has / will be for the majority of people.

30 minutes nearer, wow :D:D:D

Ridiculous! :o

Pattaya has NOTHING going for it other than the adult playgrounds that are the bars and nightlife. The beaches are filthy. The water is filthy. There is way too much traffic and pollution.

If people were interested in a family "clean" environment, then they would go to Sri Racha up the road and already 30+ minutes closer to even the current airport. But despite it's attractive "clean" environment, it hasn't been at the top of the places to go list.

Puh-lease! Pattaya is for playing. There are far, far, more beautiful beaches in Thailand (and the world), so why the hel_l would anyone want to go to a "cleaned-up" Pattaya?

A zebra without the stripes is still not - and will never be - a stallion!

You are right, but in 10 years time do you really expect to see soi 6,7,8, Post Office, Pattayaland etc in their current mode of business ? I think not. Shopping malls are my guess with Beach Road pedestrianised.

I can remember people asking this same question 10 years ago and the answer is still yes.

Sex is Thailand's bread and butter! :o

Agree UG.

Get rid of sex and Pattaya is dead.

That's totally ridiculous to say "get rid of sex and Pattaya is dead". This is Thailand's 2nd largest city. Getting rid of sleaze and everything and everybody who indulges would do Pattaya a power of good. Hundreds of thousands of people who never venture into Pattaya because of all the sleaze would absolutely love to come to town of an evening and not be accosted by bar girls and have to see men pretending to be gay so they can get money from a few farang tricks.

I can't really believe that "hundreds of thousands of" boring prudes are just waiting for a chance to have a big gospel meeting in Pattaya, but what do you do when the meetings over after two hours and nobody bought anything or tipped anyone anywhere? :o

I am beginning to wonder about you Tammi. Have you ever been to Pattaya?

My interpretation of accosted is to be approached and spoken to.

Well it would be pretty boring if you were sat at a bar and nobody behind the bar spoke to you wouldn`t it?

As far as Tourist females are concerned ( I assume that you include females within the word `people` which you use) you will find that the bar girls have the utmost respect for them and would never approach them in the manner to which your post infers.

A husband and wife tourist can go to as many bars as you would like to name and neither would be approached by a bar girl in a solicitous manner.

Your generalisations I feel would be better if you could back them up with facts. :D

There's bars and bars. But I guess it would be boring for lonely guys and that seems to be why most of them are here - to have somebody, anybody to talk to.

As far as Tourist females are concerned ( I assume that you include females within the word `people` which you use) you will find that the bar girls have the utmost respect for them and would never approach them in the manner to which your post infers.

Nonsense. It was wriien elsewhere on another thread about the middleaged, matronly, grey haired, lady who was given a leaflet for restaurant with under the table services. This on her way to the Post Office! And if I am in town I hear the bar girls say "Madam, madam, come Madam." And the 'boys' outside their esablishments, and the go-go girls. All trying to get anybody to come watch them do their thing. Not fun for the hundreds of thousands of 'other' people.

Sorry to tell you, but I have seen this happen, much to the horror and embarrasment of the wife.

Yes a bit more infrastructure in Pattaya would be a big benefit to the city and I can understand TAT wanting to improve the citys look but there are many other places to take families to, not saying that families should'nt go to Pattaya, but its a place thats different in its own way and alot people are happy for it to stay that way.I like it the way it is
