PHUKET: -- Chamroen Tipayapongthada, who was one of the key figures in the dismantling of the Phuket taxi mafia last year, will return to the island as Governor of the Province.

The proclamation was made official yesterday when the Cabinet endorsed the transfer and promotion of 58 senior Interior Ministry officials throughout the country.

Accordingly Mr Chamroen, who is currently Vice Governor of Nakhon Pathom province, on the outskirts of Bangkok, will take up to the post of Phuket Governor on October 1.

Nisit Jansomwong, who has served as Phuket Governor since October 1 last year, was yesterday confirmed to be transferred to the post of Governor of Nonthaburi province, also on the outskirts of Bangkok, effective October 1.

Mr Chamroen was instrumental in the crackdown on illegal taxi drivers, while offering drivers who wanted to “turn good” to legally join the ranks of registered taxi drivers on the island.

The shirt says it all... another holiday maker on tax payer's pay roll.

In which respect did he dismantle the taxi mob ? It's worse than it was before and no action taken at all.

In years past I was hopeful the new guy would curb the extortion, mafia influence, corruption, etc., but I gave up hope of this happening, especially in light of what the Army/Navy could have done and didn't do.

Weather they have a license or not does not make them good or bad. If they have/use rate

meters and charge according to the government rates, don't drive like lunatics, don't drive

under the influence of alcohol or drugs, don't take/demand kickbacks from gem shops and

tourist venues, don't beat up/picket hotel drivers and there hotels. There is a lot of work

to do when it comes to reforming taxis/tuk tuks in Phuket. whistling.gif
