Poll says most people want new CDC to understand the people’s wishes

BANGKOK: -- Over half of the people polled by a pollster said they wanted the new 21-member of Constitution Drafting Committee to understand the wishes of the people.

Nida Poll of the National Institute of Development Administration gauged the opinions of 1,250 people from different walks of life across the country during September 10-11 regarding the qualifications of the 21 charter writers.

The poll shows the following results: 56.88 percent of the respondents want the charter writers to understand the wishes of the people; 19.44 percent want the writers to have prior experience in charter writing; 16.96 percent want the writers to understand Thai politics; 15.28 percent want the writers to have background in political science, public administration or public laws; 6.24 percent say they must be good mediators and 1.52 percent say they must represent political parties or political groups.

Asked who should be appointed into the steering committee for reform, the poll shows the followings: 36 percent say they should represent all professional groups; 14.96 percent say they should be academics; 12.7 percent that they must not be politicians or represent political groups; 12.16 percent say they must be members of the National Reform Council or the CDC; 9.04 percent say they should be military or police officers and 8.56 percent say they should be representatives of political parties.

What!. And just less than half want them to ignore or not understand the wishes of the people.

Would they just prefer others to decide their futures?

Well then they don't have to think about it and ask questions ...

this poll is actually useless IMO, the people obviously want a constitution that forces office holders to do their jobs stamp out corruption and abuse of power, and one that also protects freedoms, holds people to account and treats everyone as equal under the law, pretty simple and basic really

Well that's not going to happen

Basicly the Prime Minister is to be elected by the People and cannot be appointed, being appointed for any reason can lead to nepotism , corruption and worst of all dictatorship ,not something the people want , something the present Junta understands pretty well.

The junta isn't going anywhere just yet, They're waiting for something and it hasn't happened yet. The problem is they think it's important to be holding power when it arrives and I'm not sure I agree. Seems to me its a lose/lose equation for this guy, I think he's nicely fracked whatever he does.

Still, I don't expect Mr P will be asking me for my opinion any time soon. Though it's probably smarter than his.

So who gets to decide what the majority or the people want? Surely not some pollster or gov official and since the majority don't really think about anything to do with politics unless bribed or coerced unless they live in a big city or are rich hi-so folks who are just out to get richer. Most common folks just want to make enough money to live and be happy. Left alone if at all possible. So this poll is just another pointless opinion probably fabricated or the facts or questions twisted to gain a foreseen response.

This is certainly as it should be, but the very last thing the current government wants. True Democracy is a nasty concept to the current government.

The NCPO failed to get a new darft charter to a referendum even though it appointed everyone to the various organizations involved. Changing the makeup of the CDC, NRC, NLA will not change the end result - another failure.

To move forward the NCPO needs to recuse itself from making the appointments. The Constitutional Court would seem ideal to make the appointments even though it was created by the previous coup. While people may question some of the court's rulings that seem unconstitutional in nature, its members do have substantial constitutional experience.

Since considerable effort was been spent on the 2015 draft, a redo need only be directed to limited parts of it, especially if an earlier constitution is adopted as a fundamental basis. This would eliminate the need for the NRC to be involved. The NLA can vote on acceptance of the final product for the referendum or the Junta can alone decide to place it in the referendum.

That would be true of every government of Thailand. Also true of most countries.
