Hi, apologies if this has been asked before, i did do a search but its like sifting through a needle in a haystack.......

What are my options for extending a 60 day tourist visa in chiang mai, usually i get 2 x 60 day visas and take a trip to the border after the 1st 60 days has expired, but i was talking to a couple of fellow travellers last trip who said i could just go to the immigration office in chiang mai and i would have several different option although they did not expand on that. Was this just traveller BS or can i really get an extension on a 60 day visa, in total i would want to stay for 4 months (the usually trip away during winter), if i could extend it for 30 days would i be able to do that twice? giving me 120 days in total.....was trying to avoid the border run which i have come to detest, if theres a way to do it i don't mind if it costs a little more?

Many thanks

You can extend a tourist visa entry of 60 days by 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 Bht.

This can only be done once per entry. You would have to leave the country on or before the 90th day.

If a double entry visa is held returning to the country whilst the visa remains valid gives another 60 day stay which in turn can again be extended.

Yes you can extend each 60 day stay of a tourist visa by 30 days at the CM immigration office. If fully utilised a double entry tourist visa can give you nearly 6 months but involves 1 border run and 2 extensions. Triple entries are available from some embassies/consulates which can give you nearly 9 months with 2 border runs and 3 extensions.

Extensions are easy to get. You need to complete TM7 form, supply a photo and pay 1,900 baht.

me again.....can i get my next 60 day visa stamped at immigration instead of the border? i think i've heard this before but again it could be traveller BS .

No !

You must leave the country, enter another country and then return to activate a new entry.

i know!! I've been coming to thailand for 14 years but this last year i heard a couple of people say this, but sometimes you just have to resign yourself to the fact they are just full of sh1t......or they gave an immigration official a back hander.....?

How near to the expiration date can I get a 30 extension on a Single entry 60 day tourist visa? Can I get a re entry at the same time and would it cover the extension? Does this vary office to office ?

Thanks in advance

  • You should be able to apply within the last couple of weeks at any office.
  • As soon as the extension is given you can apply for a re-entry permit to cover that extended stay.

Thank you for this reply

So getting a re entry would not cover any extension ?

Do they want to see onward travel plans?

  • Once you've been granted the 30 day extension you can apply for a re-entry permit to cover the 30 days.
  • No onwards travel plans needed.
  • Note that re-entry permits do not add days but keep the original 30 day stay alive.
  • Alternatively you could leave and re-enter under visa exempt entry (if you qualify) and get a full 30 day stay.

Once you get the 30 day extension the re-entry permit would be valid up to the your permit to stay you get from it. For example if you applied for the extension 15 days early the re-entry permit would be valid for 45 days.
