Ranger killed in Pattani roadside blast

PATTANI: -- A volunteer paramilitary ranger was killed by a roadside bomb in Pattani's Panare district yesterday morning. Phutthapong Homsung, 22, was patrolling the route with his six-member team, when the explosion killed him.

The incident occurred at about 6.30am in Ban Rawor in tambon Don near the entrance to Ban Rawor School.

The police bomb squad, led by Pattani police deputies Pol Colonel Prappol Meemongkol and Pol Colonel Kwandee Chimplee, collected bomb fragments for further investigation.

They suspect the attack was carried out by the Runda Kumpulan Kecil's new generation of insurgents. The bomb, a battery-powered booby-trap device in a 25kg cooking gas cylinder, left a hole 80cm wide and 50cm deep.

Is the Thai military short of armed forces that it has to depend on private armies that act with the full authority of the Thai military? They have access to military munition bunkers but seem only generally accountable to the military for their actions.
