CHIANG MAI: -- The director of a school in Chiang Mai province was removed from office after more than 1,500 students staged a protest demanding his dismissal.

Nikhom Sindhupong, director of Wattanothaipayap School, was accused of lack of transparency in his administration of the school and spending school funds to purchase unnecessary items that were not related to school development or education. Sittichai Moonkhian, the chief of Secondary Educational Service Area Office 34, transferred the director to an acting post elsewhere pending a fact-finding probe.

Sittichai chaired a meeting between the school director, teachers and student representatives, before announcing his decision.

The protest, which began at 9am under the watchful eye of police and soldiers, dissolved in the afternoon and the students resumed their classes when Sittichai announced that a fact-finding committee would be set up to probe the matter and the director would be moved to another post. He said he would ensure justice for all sides. Nikhom declined to comment.

An unnamed Mattayom 5 student who joined the rally said the school budget was spent on unnecessary things like carp fish that cost Bt80,000; new car seats; and a coffee-making machine that cost Bt60,000 allegedly misappropriated from the library budget.

Good to see that the younger generation voicing their concerns about the way the school budget was used to inflate the directors ego and self perceived status to the detriment of the students, the school and no doubt a number of the staff.

Of course the director has been moved to another sinecure thus no doubt the plundering of yet another school budget can begin.

Don't be confused, this is a staff protest, the kids are just pawns. As if the kids have any clue of school expenses and purchasing.

Surely Sittichai, under whose watch this happened should be fired too. These trough feeding pigs protect each other as feeding time is so lucrative.

My stepdaughter goes to this school. It is one of the best public schools in Chiang Mai. If the director is found to be dishonest I hope he is prosecuted within the law & banned from teaching & administration in schools. That sort of money would go a long way to buying rescourses for the school. Its not for personal use.

Funny Rumour has it this is a repeat of his last change of position. Under a cloud of questions about the directors financial responsibilities or lack of.responsibility. Musical chairs comes to mind.

The Thai solution to qyestionable activity for anyone on the publics payroll seems to be a transfer until things settle down . Thus there will be at the very least two potential thieves moved (probably more). Each one brings his specielty of doing his magic act with making budget money disapear into a new home noted as his personal rat hole.

Sack them and bring charges, then put them where the other lawbreakers who do not have funds nor backing of godfathers go. straight to jail do not accept bail while awaiting delay via an appeal.

I have challanged anyone to find any part of the Thai system which is not corrupt for several years, but sad as it is, not a single response has been forthcoming.

People who are suppose to alloy they orders are as guilty as the school director unless they were getting a piece of the graft also. No honor in Thailand! Money in there pockets more important than education. Hope he suffers for what he did in jail! But connected to the higher power and not serve no time. Next director will do the same thing!

Does this make the over spending right about who learned about the abuse of school funds. are you one of the people getting kick back our are you just stupid!

Who called the police and military?

Why weren't all those children arrested under the illegal assembly laws?

There was a post giving credit to the students for voicing their concerns. I simply pointed out that the students are being told to protest and would have had no idea about budgetary issues normally.

But it is possible I am stupid too because I am not getting a kickback, and those were your two choices.

Dipping the ink in the company well a bit to often.. or did he forget to dip his ink somewhere else..

Well at least the BAND Director in BKK, did a round about in the wrong righteous direction.. he asked for donations from the Sugar Dads and Moms for his band's trip abroad to take place in a competition .. they were the only entrant in the category..

Send in the Miltary.. motivation platoon awaits.
