webfact
Laos expects to see population number 6.8 million this yearVIENTIANE : -- The Lao government has estimated that by the end of this year the total population of the country will reach 6.8 million, an increase of over 21 percent from 2005 when the national population numbered 5.6 million, Lao News Agency reported. Speaking to a workshop on population, sexual and reproductive health situation analysis in Vientiane on Wednesday, Khamlien Pholsena, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, said the result of the fourth National Population and Housing Census 2015 is expected to be announced in the near future.Estimates by researchers suggest that the population of Laos will reach more than 10 million by 2050.The findings of the population and sexual and reproductive health situation analysis will be considered for incorporation into the eighth five-year national socio-economic development plan of the government (2016-2020), Dr Khamlien said.Realizing that population statistics are very important for planning national development, the government has improved the structure of the National Statistics Bureau ensuring that it is in line with the current environment for devising policies and development strategies.Laos recorded a nationwide population of around 3.5 million in 1985, about 4.5 million in 1995 and 5.6 million in 2005.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/laos-expects-to-see-population-number-6-8-million-this-year -- Thai PBS 2015-09-
farangmick
Roughly the same number as the economic migrants fighting their way into Europe.
jalansanitwong
What a useless article.! All we've learnt is that Laotians are having alot of unprotected sex. What about the economy? In what century will they come out of the middle ages? is the Communist Lao government still practicing the old trick of letting farangs build up a business and then when its trading well they pull the carpet from under him and take over? The best thing about Laos is the French influences are still lingering expecially regarding cheap wine and hot bread rolls and sticks.

bandos2000
seems to me that "old trick" is alive and well, even in 2015, cant say what and where, but its a big business.
simon43
cant say what and where, but its a big business. We are talking about the Lao government 'pulling the carpet' from under the foreigner's business. I can't recall reading about the government doing this; they actually have some pretty strong guarantees for foreign investors. Surely you can remember just one example??
