Reservoirs only slightly replenished by tropical storm Vamco, except in East

BANGKOK, 21 September 2015 (NNT) – Although the increased rainfall brought about by tropical depression Vamco has benefited farmers in many areas of the country, the amount of water held in reservoirs has increased only slightly, according to Minister of Agriculture Chatchai Sarikulya.

General Chatchai said on Sunday that Vamco has brought useful rainfall to areas ranging from the lower northeastern region to the eastern region. The increased precipitation was especially beneficial to farmlands in the central region, where less water discharged from the four water-deprived major reservoirs in the Chao Phraya basin is now needed to supply crop-growing areas.

Gen. Chatchai said reservoirs in the eastern region had been substantially replenished by the storm-carried rain. This was especially true for Rayong where 94 million cubic meters of water were added to the main reservoir in the province, raising the amount of water retained there to 360 million cubic meters or 69 percent of capacity.

This quantity of water is enough to satisfy farming demand in the province until the beginning of the next rainy season. In nearby Chonburi, a total of 41 million cubic meters of water have been added to the province's various reservoirs.

The agriculture minister noted, however, that the quantity of water held in reservoirs in the northern, northeastern and central regions has been replenished only slightly by the storm.
