Korat Police Lt. Col. Supol Surawut stands near the scene where a 27-year-old man, who had until recently been in prison since age 18, killed himself with a homemade bomb.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — An unemployed ex-convict killed himself with a bomb yesterday, police in northeastern Thailand said.

Ponthawat Charoenwetch, 27, detonated a homemade explosive at a fresh produce market in Nakhon Ratchasima province at around 2am early Monday, according to local officer Police Lt. Col. Supol Surawut, who said the man had been unable to find work since being released from prison.

“He was upset that his friends and close ones insult and reprimand him for being jobless,” the officer told reporters.

Hideous. That's what despair does to you. People kill themselves when they can't maintain their ideas about themselves. If folk knew just how difficult things will be if it all goes Pete Tong they'd be a lot more cautious a lot earlier. The number of British kids who act as if their community's tragic cases weren't once as bold and thoughtless as themselves is truly staggering. Defend yourself at all times.

It's not really surprising no-one would employ him considering his record. Rape, assault and drug charges.

This is a sad story. The guy was 18 years old when he was sentenced to 9 years. If Thailand had a modern prison regime (i.e. professional anger management, drug addiction treatment, vocational training, resocialization) he might would have got his life under control and become happy und useful for society. Seems like he was really devasted instead, so the convictions 2006 now seems more like a death-sentence. Well, at least he didn't rape anyone and didn t harm someone else. RIP

Something is not logical here. Well, this is Thailand. I remember when an IRA guy blew himself up in his flat on Oxford St. ... British police didn't think it was a suicide.

Analogy: I remember working China in the 80's. We joked that there was no AIDS in China. Why? Because the government did not permit AIDS. Don't get it? There is no terrorism in Thailand. Why? The government doesn't permit it.

I knew a young guy in Oz who suffered from depression after losing his job. He first attempted suicide with a shotgun but flinched at the last millisecond. H e was left permanently disfigured with basically half a face on the left side. Because of this, he was even more "unemployable" After a while, he made a bomb and went to a blind bend on a railway near our home. He laid on top of the bomb and detonated it killing himself instantly. In the note he left to his loved ones, he said that if he failed "this time, the train will finish me properly" He was 19. RIP to Karl and to Ponthawat.

Thai prison sentences are purely about punishment and revenge. They have nothing to do with correction or rehabilitation.

Sorry, but this headline made me think of "Death by Bunga".

Oh yeah, I had a friend 25 years ago that stuck a shotgun in his mouth & succeeded.

It was sad for sure, but the guy had lots of friends. I was quite envious of some of his hot girlfriends.

It was his choice. Up to him I suppose.

Nothing wrong with that for thugs, rapists murderers and drug runners.

Yes, you're correct. They only condone Suthep and his yellow shirt nutcase mates when it comes to terrorism

And the problem with that is? It's what I should want if it was my wife or stepdaughter who was raped.

Why the guy was a scumbag rapist, learned how to make bombs, possibly a terrorist in the making, i don,t feel sorry for the scumbag, i hope he rots out in the open.

It amazes me all the do gooders who fell sorry for this cretin

How about feeling some sorrow for the girl he raped

She has to live with that trauma for life

Well..........................there's a couple of Burmese lads who may (or may not) get labelled by the process. There was an Aussie DNA specialist yesterday saying the the process was <deleted>, and a British reporter in court said that the whole business was "surreal".
