Illegal fishing nets removed from Samut Sakhon's waters

SAMUT SAKHON, 01 October 2015, (NNT) - Fisheries officials from the provincial administrative office of Samut Sakhon have removed illegal fishing tools in a bid to eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the area.

More than 100 locals observed the authority's removal of 80 stow nets from the fishing waters in 4 sub-districts in Mueng district.

The operation went by smoothly. The officials had previously informed local fishermen of the necessity of upholding the EU's regulations on eliminating IUU fishing and had peacefully asked them to remove the illegal fishing tools.

According to the local fishermen, they are willing to comply with the regulations but asked for compensation for the loss of income.
