NARATHIWAT: -- Two border patrol policemen were shot dead in an ambush by suspected militants in Narathiwat’s Tak Bai district on Wednesday.

The two policemen, Pol Sgt-Maj Narongrith Noothong, 35, and Pol L/Cpl Winai Cheedkate, 26, left their base camp in a motorcycle reportedly on information gathering information.

As they were travelling in a dirt road running parallel to the Su-ngai Kolok river in Tambon Kohsathorn, three suspected militants who had laid in wait behind the roadside bushes opened fire at them with assault rifles and pistols.

The two policemen lost control of their motorbike which rammed into a barbed-wire fence and got trapped. Then the militants emerged from the bushes and shot them to death at point-blank range.

A service handgun of one of the two policemen was taken away by the fleeing militants.

Sending officers out on patrol on a motorcycle in that area is like playing Russian roulette with their lives.
