BANGKOK, 9 October 2015 (NNT) – The Minister of Tourism and Sports has granted financial rewards to athletes and coaches who competed at the international competition.

The Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul has chaired the reward granting ceremony for athletes, coaches, and sports associations that have taken part at international competitions, particularly at the 28th SEA games.

A sum of 178.5 million baht was rewarded to medal-winning participants of the international competition, including an extra 20 percent to the offer of the National Sports Development Fund.

Scholarships for 55 national athletes with outstanding achievements have also been granted at this event, providing financial support for their education courses at a sum of 3.18 million baht.

Scholarships okay but cash rewards converts "sports' to a job and Thai

sports not very good at the job either !

As a sports coach here I can tell you just how abysmal the coaching approach in Thailand is. I would much rather see the money going towards sensible development and sports for all. At the moment only people from reasonably well-off families can progress in sport. Kids from poor families have next to no chance. My sport is cycling and what I have seen and experienced here beggars belief. But it's the Thai way. Results today: don't worry about tomorrow. Well, in my sport that doesn't work because you have to have a 5 to 10 year perspective - a plan that would develop riders over this period may end up producing some great riders. At the moment it is hit and miss. And the way they treat the kids damages them and prevents them from progressing. Rant over.
