Russian cruise missiles strikes prompt global aviation officials to issue safety alerts

MONTREAL: -- The cruise missiles fired from the Caspian Sea by Russia and destined for Syria have heightened concerns that commercial flights in the region could be put in danger.

A Russian animation shows how the deadly weapons follow a path over Iran and Iraq a route for many carriers that links Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation, the UN’s air safety arm said some airlines had already opted to fly alternative routes.

Eurocontrol, the pan European air traffic control agency told airlines there had been no significant change within Europe but officials from the organisation and the ICAO have met to draw up contingency plans in event of further disruptions.

As many as 800 flights a day could be affected if the heavily used corridors are deemed unsafe, or under extreme circumstances, become unavailable.

Using alternative routes would mean longer flights and increase fuel consumption significantly.

So basically they are making a case that they don't want to expend more fuel money to keep aircraft safe and allow a group like ISIS to be dealt with. Really? If so, then those are some seriously greedy, selfish, anal aholes.

Ummm...4 missiles hit Iran! And most are not hitting ISIS targets. They are hitting groups that are fighting ISIS, but just happen to be anti-Assad.

Let's also not forget the Russian hardware that took down a plane in the Ukraine.

The investigation by the Dutch Safety Board has concluded that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down by a Buk missile that was fired from rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine, according to a Dutch newspaper. The official report is due to be released on Tuesday.

...........

"Either way, the Buk was developed and produced in Russia. You can assume that those rebels can't control a Buk-device themselves. I suspect they did with the help of former Russian soldiers," two sources told the newspaper.

Better safe than sorry....again....

I'll bet Malaysian airlines still flies over the region. What could go wrong ?

Concern countries can issue NOTAM

More sanctions on Russia, please.

And on the very day they stated that MH17 was shot down by a Buk missile launched from Eastern Ukraine.

Such irony.

Cruise missiles dont shoot down aircraft

This for me is of real concern, albeit I have no knowledge of how the missile systems work. The airway route system between Turkey and Iran is extremely busy. Have a look on flight radar 24 to see the extent of traffic operating through the area.

Does not matter who shot MH17 Ukraine will pay. The must have closed the air since they had started to bomb their citizens. Isurance companies will sue Kiev soon

Sanctions are for countries who violate international law and UN mandates sir. In Syria's case, that would be the US of A. coffee1.gif

Putin went into Syria telling everyone that he was going in to back up Assad and would target anyone who was fighting against Assad. If that means bombing American backed so called moderate terrorists then so be it. There is very little difference between them all.

I also haven't read a single thing from Iran about cruise missiles dropping on Iran only " Reports " from anti Russian media outlets. You would think they might have a few words to say had 4 missiles hit Iran

This scaremongering about cruise missiles taking down commercial aircraft is also ridiculous. Airlines tend to cruise at around the 30 - 40,000 feet mark whereas cruise missiles hug the ground to avoid radar which is what makes them so effective so the chances of them accidently hitting a plane are zero

The only thing that is p"ssing off Obama and Cameron is that Putin is showing them up to be utterly useless as leaders and at actually fighting a war. A poll in the Uk shows that he has a 70% support for his actions in Syria. I have no idea how the American people see it ?

I think that his plan is the best there is at the moment as both the UK and the US have failed miserably to tackle ISIS and need to back off and let Putin try. Destroy ISIS and the anti Assad terrorists, stabilize the country and then look at removing Assad in a civilised way when this is done
