Wonder how this would have been handled before youtube ?

The internet is proving to be a very serious Game Changer in social relations of every kind --Business, Politics, Entertainment...the list is quite long. I like your question. My best guesstimate for an answer is "If this happened before YouTube, nothing would have been reported, no action would have been taken, and we would not be talking about it here."

“Needless to add, the culprits of this despicable act have had their employment at White Room immediately terminated,” he said.

"The move restores some confidence in tourists’ security on the island’s busiest party street, though the White Room was ordered to close for seven days from last Saturday (Oct 10)."

This does nothing. How about arresting the "culprits" and charging them with assault inflicting grievous bodily harm?

A complaint would need to be made to the police by the victims for a prosecution to be started.

Is that really the case here? I don't know.

In many western countries the police can charge offenders without the victims cooperation.

yes, hard to believe. in USA all you would need is the video and everybody would be questioned.

so police in Thailand can't do anything without a victim? What if the victim is dead, or in a coma, or in this case, so afraid of the mafia police they fled the country?

Avoid the White Room smile.png Hit them where it hurts, their pockets !

Why will you avoid it because bouncers take random customers and fight them without any kind of reason?

Really?

While I generally agree that I do not care what anyone thinks about me or says per se; it is different when I am patronizing a business and spending my money in that business. As long as I am polite- I expect the people in that business to reciprocate, They don't have to kiss my rear; but I would not expect them to speak negatively to me or about me while in their presence. If they do- I shall respond in my own way, pay my bill and never come back. When enough people do this- they will get the hint and either change or go broke. Business is built on reputation and more people talk about negative situations than you would imagine.

100% agreee !

The only thing is they will never get the hint but rather go broke like we see it everywhere in TH

No joking, buffalos are smarter compared to most of them... coffee1.gif

'“Needless to add, the culprits of this despicable act have had their employment at White Room immediately terminated ...'

'“The White Room has suffered financially from the order to close and it will have to work really hard to bring back its good reputation,” said Entertainment Business Association President Weerawit Kurasombat.' Wasn't he the one who, only yesterday, claimed the culprits shouldn't lose their jobs?

I've been to Phuket as a tourist and also on business. Nothing will convince me to return - ever.

Oh yeah, last time it was interesting to listen the local workers speak. I happen to understand Thai to a level and what they spoke was something that most tourists would deplore...if not abhor...

Fantastic. Which local workers are you referring to, the Isaan imports, or the Bumese and Nepalese? Can't really say there are many actual Phuket 2nd and 3rd generation families here that you would meet being a local worker, as their families have quite a bit of money and wouldn't be doing menial work.

Back on topic, amazing how White Room says the bad employees are out on the street without a job, while the local entertainment president says they are not. Who's telling porkies, the White Room, entertainment president, or perhaps both.................

Did I say I speak or understand Burmese or Nepalese - or whatever they speak in those countries? I understand Thai and Isaan dialect to a level. Southern Malay dialect is rather difficult but the meaning I do get.

I have seen the Thai society from bottom to the top and from top to bottom. The underpaid low level workers I understand better since they have little if no chance to improve their lives. I would probably act much the same and grab what I could if there would be a chance to do so.

That does not mean I have to put up with their bitter and malicious attitudes or rudeness. if I am a paying customer they could at least try to keep up good behavior and manners - which very few do. And it certainly doesn't go very well down getting racial slurs or comments about my looks or intellect. Why would anyone in their senses like to accept that kind of behavior?

Unfortunately, even less I like the so called hi-sos. The ones I've seen and worked with (not a pleasant experience) have been greedy mob kind of people. All smile and putting up front trying to pass for a decent person but around 95% of them fail miserably. All they can think of how to get your money - or in my case company money - to themselves. No help or understanding about how a real business should be run. Full of themselves with entitlement.

I've been around 15 years now and every year I ask myself why to stay Thailand. Lately been elsewhere in China and liked it a lot (I suppose change of scenery helps). I have some nice Thai friends and not all is bad but regarding these *&%!(/(/!!! places mob running them, I have no need to put myself or my family in harms way.

Until the day Thailand and Thais clean up their act. I am not holding my breath.

I totally agree with you about Phuket. My last visit there was years ago and there will be no other. Same with Khrabi, especially Riley Beach, where the locals offered one of the most unfriendly, brutal and aggressive 'welcome' I have ever seen in this country. A paradise, yes ... but handled by buffalos (sorry buffalos, that's not nice for you, who are awesome and wonderful animals).

As for what you say about local workers and their comments, especially their comments about white visitors and residents, I'm sure you realize that :

- It's getting worse, and how surprising is that when 'authorities' (of all sides) encourage xenophobia, simply because accusing foreigners for local flaws is the oldest and easiest demagogy trick in the book (Europeans are good at that too).

- It's happening not only in Phuket but almost everywhere, and tourist destinations are on top of that list of course. Most Thais seem to assume that white people are too dumb to learn Thai, let alone understand Esarn, so one of the most popular games among locals is to throw aggressive remarks (preferably with a smile on their face) like "when will you go back to your country, you fat buffoon" ... and that's one of the mildest.

If all the white visitors did understand what is being thrown at them several times a day in Bangkok, Chiangmai, Pattaya, Phuket, Samui etc., I do believe that most of them would seriously consider leaving this country out of their next vacation plans and telling their friends back home to do the same.

I've just moved away from Phuket, after a 5 year stint there and mostly because I no longer find joy in the 'culture' of the place anymore. Greed, crime, traffic accidents, cost of living etc have overtaken the care free ways I once knew. The violence and abuse given by many (including some foreigners) Thai's must only come down to envy. Envy of what they see is the difference in standard of living, income, wealth beyond their imagination. I can understand that. Thankfully most of the country is still very welcoming where kids wave and people genuinely smile. There are decent Thais and they outnumber the 'Ugly Thai' by far.

It would not have been handled at all. It would have been just another incident in the day of the life of corruption in the Land of Smiles...or is that Land of Frowns now?
