PM, Opposition Spar Over Belarus Deal

An otherwise straightforward National Assembly debate on economic cooperation between Cambodia and Belarus descended into a political dogfight yesterday, with Prime Minister Hun Sen lambasting opposition assemblymen for criticizing the government and its actions.

Members of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) slammed the potential deal with the landlocked Eastern European country, which included an agreement that Cambodia will buy its tractors exclusively from Belarusian companies.

CNRP lawmaker Lim Kim-Ya complained that before the National Assembly session, the commission in charge of vetting the deal did not allow commission members to ask questions or debate the deal at length.
