English school owner, not teacher.

A teacher can walk away from his/her problems. A school owner with debts and obligations doesn't normally have that option.

RIP

An owner has it a lot better than a teacher, in general, since they are their own boss and usually make more money... even if they 'may' have a higher work load.

I have far more sympathy for teachers than owners as their are a majority of exploitative owners out there.

Anybody can walk away from their problems if they have legs that work. It's a choice.

Anybody can walk away - including teachers - if the Terms of the Contract, to which they willingly agreed, were broken.

It could be argued that "moving on" is easier for a skilled employee, than for an employer who has capital investment.

As with parties to any Contract, there is risk both for employer and employee. Each must make their own assessment of that risk, and live by their decision.

I have only circumstational evidence, but a guess would be that there are at least as many incompetant and ineffective teachers of English as there are exploitative school owners. Maybe the regulation of both should be tightened.

I find one of the earlier poster's comments among Indians strange. Having known and interacted a fair bit with the local Indian Community in Bangkok, most of them despite being sneered at by the locals, have done very well for themselves and even the poor and uneducated ones who come from India , still manage to do well in a sense as they are willing to do multiple jobs etc. Its very rare that you find an Indian that has gone busts or even found begging. Furthermore, the various Indian communities here are very close knit and they will rally to support each other in hard times, the same even applies for the poorer UP Indians workers here and they even have the temples and various Indian Organisations to assists them.I guess this guy was not really a typical Indian as he was maybe trying to be more farang-like ie English Language school, hanging out only with farangs, dressings, etc. RIP to him though.

It's sad to take your life if you have no family or dependents. If you do then it's a selfish/cowardly act. Not sure which applies.

I don't have sympathy for those who take this path when the going gets tough as something can be done. I have sympathy for those who get hurt at no fault of their own.

Ps. I wouldn't wanna learn French from a Chinese teacher! Haven't met an Indian who can speak perfect English yet. Not that they don't exist.

Depression is not a choice. It's a deadly disease of the brain. We don't chiose brain chemistry nor its quirks and disorders.

Hard to fathom, but yes, very sad

Yeah right. Going back to your country is not live spending the rest of your life in a Thai prison. You recover economically and then you can return. If you really think that Thailand is worth dying for. I like it here, but definitely not that much.

i see where you're coming from. But your argument is weak in this case. Did he get depressed as a result of those circumstance or did he always suffer depression. Most prisoners are on anti-depressants. Most people get depressed at some point in their lives.

Well put Lukasisgood. Depression affects many people and in some cases can lead people to end their lives. I would like to see what his business partner has to say.

If you sometimes feel depressed then see a doctor and get anti-depressant meds. I did a few years back. Helped me. Also go talk to your local embassy via their website or social media. They can give you information and support on expat groups or charity organisations near you.

Remember what they said on Monty Pythons Flying Circus. "Always look on the bright side of life".

You obviously have no idea the stresses involved being a business owner, especially if you've taken out loans to build your business. You're always worrying if there's going to be enough business and always spending money to bring in new business. Collecting a paycheck is easy and not nearly as stressful as running a business.

Don't forget the protesting over the years can cause you a lot of added stress and what did the Thai government do for small business sweet fa compared to corporate business around Thailand ..

That's a rough one.

"Broke" and "foreign" are the last two things you ever want to be simultaneously in this country.

Think positive Fusion. You can always FO back home.

So the guy was still sporting enough cash to relocate?

I guess the word "broke" in the thread title must have thrown me.

Clinical depression is a disease it dosn't happen just because somone is going through bad times. There is an actual physical disorder in the brain chemistry that creates a constant feeling of hopelessness. Yes some people comitte suicide for a reason but many suicides are also caused by this physical disorder. The brain is naturally wired to avoid death it's actually really hard to decide to kill yourself. It's possible that his financial problemes were a result of his depression then it finally beat him. It's just not warranted to call somone who kills themsleves a coward. They actually may not have been able to stop it. It's possible it was just a decision, but we would never know that unless we could measure seratonin levels and get a receptor count. Edited by Lukasisgood

What a shame.

Should I die here in Thailand, I sincerely hope the details aren't posted up on this site with the usual crass comments following. The dead deserve some dignity.

What dignity is three in death? Everybody does it.

People get themselves in trouble and suffer depression all over the world. There is nothing special about thailand in this reguard.

The difference is that people don't have to get themselves in trouble in Thailand with all the locals eager to deliver trouble.

Are they really that bad? I was under the impression that if you are calm and respectful Thais are easy to get along with.

RIP, I am surprised that only one member pointed out that he was part of a Thai Language School "Visa Mill", considering the difficulties that such schools have faced recently, it might be that he saw no way out of a desperate situation. Less customer, less income, debts piling up.

I used to work with the Employment services and got to know few Indians and Sikhs. Knowing a bit about their culture I highly doubt that any Sikh would commit suicide. They firmly reject suicide. And the person who allegedly committed a suicide was Sikh. Sikhs believe that both birth and death are the mercy of the creator. No one has the right to take his/her own life.

Agreed.

For many Thailand gives a sense of life that is not offered in their own country. I know that I, for one, have the same problem.

As they say, the prophet is never loved in his own land.

My heart goes out to this guy.

The prophet? I thought he was hindu not muslim. India is a lovely place to live, pathumthani is the <deleted> of Bangkok. No disrespect to the victim RIP. Maybe it was the money. Or lack of it.

I was a former student . I am surprised by some things and not surprised about some things. I am surprised that so far only one other former student replied. Not surprised that he claimed this guy made a lot of promises and didn't deliver on any of them. I am surprised that this guys name and he is Indian, because I personally asked him in person what his name was and if he was from India and he looked me right in the eyes and told me his real name and he was Brazilian, grew up in Brazil, taught in Brazil, and then moved to Thailand. Fake name, fake nationality.

I understand so many of you saying your heart goes out to him and feeling sorry for him, and talking about depression and R.I.P., implying or outright saying he is a victim of Thailand. was not here to embrace Thailand like many of us are, he was here to exploit it. This guy was one of the biggest scumbags in Thailand. A corrupt scammer, a crook. Taking advantage of other expats and robbing them. Read on if you want to know why I am making this statement-

I talked on the phone before making the choice to enroll at school. With all the money to my name, he directed me to where the school was to meet him in the early evening, but told me to call him again from the Onnut BTS. Then he directed me to a cafe of sorts, where he was ready and waiting for me as he was drinking double Rums. That should have been enough to scare me off, so shame on me. He then promised a one year visa, and broke down the payment for me and showed me that it included my all visa fees, and my 90 day report fees.

After payment, he refused multiple calls, LINE messages, SMS's, and messages left to his assistant. This went on for weeks and weeks and led to me not only paying the visa fees I had already paid to this crook, but to almost 20,000 baht in overstay fees. This happened not only to me, but to my two close friends, and according to Noel (one of his assistants, to all the students at the school. He took our money, failed to warn us of new visa rule changes, disregarded our calls, claimed to have left the country at one point, and kept all the money we had paid for out visas. Finally we contacted him using a fake name pretending we were a student who wanted to enroll, and he offered to sell us work permits for 100,000 baht each to slove the problem.

This was a near tragic blow to me. I was actually considering leaving this country that I love so much. I was reeling from the sudden problems and debt he had caused me for months, as were hundreds of other unsuspecting expats.

This low-life, corrupt, crooked scumbag. I'm just happy to hear he is no longer able to prey on other foreigners anymore. Some people get so bad that they have no where else to turn. He was the worst. .

Sorry to anyone offended. This is the truth.

So you sought his assistance in abusing the visa system, and then you're surprised that he turned out not to be entirely honest?
