NSC to undergo major structural revamp
The Nation

BANGKOK:: -- The Cabinet has approved an amendment to the outdated National Security Act in order to restructure the National Security Council (NSC) and allow it to catch up with modern challenges such as technological threats.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said yesterday that legal amendment would redefine the term national security, which would be extended to cover modern economic and technological challenges. This would result in a major revamp of the NSC's executive structure, which would include economic and ICT officials, plus a sprinkling of academics to facilitate the organisation's strategic planning.

The deputy PM said the act has not been amended for more than 50 years, since Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat's government, which looked at security merely from a military perspective.

Besides the change in the organisation's structure, the revamp would result in changes in roles and authority of the NSC as well, Wissanu said.

"This is a major structural revamp of the NSC for the first time in 56 years," said Wissanu.

A major structural revamp of the NSC for the first time in 56 years and not a single detail of the changes and why they specifically must be made. But the timing for these changes is perfect - Junta Leader Prayut in capacity as the unelected PM having his Junta-appointed cabinet creating amendments to be considered by the rubberstamp Junta-appointed NLA.

These "changes" need to be made now obviously before the next elected government where support for military restructuring may be less ethusiastic.

Installing the infrastructure of an authoritarian state modeled on China. Think about all the authoritarian regimes and how they slowly implemented control over their population. New constitution enshrines the legal changes and now they laying the hardware side. 1984 Thai style should be interesting.
