Yes but you need to show income (40K THB a month) or have 400.000 THB in a THAI bank account to qualify.

If you don't have any of these, you can go to a neighboring country (lots of topics about that) to get a Year Visa.

If you go for the Thai Immigration Way (400k or 40k a month) then you must prove that you are living together and it's not for show

You don't receive a visa for getting married but you can apply for a non immigration 'O' visa based on marriage.

Multi Entry

  • Valid for 1 year from issue.
  • Good for people that need to exit a lot or that can't meet the extension of stay requirements.
  • 90 day maximum stay per entry.
  • In the last 30 day of any 90 day stay you can apply for a 1 year extension of stay. You need 400k in the bank for 2 months or an income of 40k pm.
  • The extension of stay can be renewed every year.
  • No 90 day reports.

Single Entry

  • Valid for 3 months from issue.
  • 90 day stay on entry.
  • In the last 30 day of the 90 day stay you can apply for a 1 year extension of stay. You need 400k in the bank for 2 months or an income of 40k pm.
  • The extension of stay can be renewed every year.
  • 90 day reports if you stay in the country for 90 consecutive days.

So if you don't earn 40k per month , don't have 400k in a Thai bank, or pay them 40k every time; you have to visa run every 3 months ? But it's still valid for a year extension before you have to apply for a new one ?

Yes.

  • At the moment some embassies/consulates will issue multi entry visas without any financial proof.
  • Others require to see some money in the bank/income. (amount varies)
  • You can apply for a new visa every year.
  • If fully utilised this visa can give a married person 15 to 17 months before needing to re-apply for a new visa.

You can apply for an extension of stay during any 90 day stay but you must meet the financial requirements.

Where was your friend married?

In Thailand or elsewhere?

Does he have a marriage certificate?

There is no Marriage Visa. You can get certain visas based on marriage or an extension based on marriage. They are NON IMMIGRANT visas.

If you do not have a government document stating you are married you have nothing.

The village ceremony does not count for the government.
