Yingluck appears at Supreme Court amid hundreds of supporters



BANGKOK: Ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra appeared at the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions this morning for examination of evidence brought to indict her for negligence of duty in the rice pledging scheme that resulted in loss of over 500 billion baht to the state.

The evidence was gathered by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and submitted to the Office of the Attorney-General to convict her in the Supreme Court.

Ms Yingluck arrived at 8.40 am as appointed by the Court to allow her examine the evidence. She was greeted by hundreds of supporters coming to give her morale support.

The supporters, mostly women, gave her large bunch of roses and orchids and shouted “Yingluck Soo Soo” (fight on).
Yingluck thanked her supporters and assured them she could defend her innocence.

She told reporters that she also had prepared more than 60 witnesses to testify in court and trusted that the court would allow them to speak as her evidence are credible.

She said her witnesses comprise two groups, the first being witnesses whose names had already been submitted to the NACC, and the second group whose names were rejected by the NACC.

She said she was hopeful that thus group of witnesses will be accepted by the Court to testify.

This goes far beyond this simply happening on her watch. This was her populist policy to help get elected. She was heading up this whole program. She regected multiple assertions by others that the system was rampant with corruption.

That's correct, there's no evidence she stole anything. However, her negligence and malfeasance resulted in losses which were not part of the legislation that was enacted by Parliament. There was never a vote to appropriate 600 billion baht for the program. Instead, she had a duty to report on the financials, monitor the losses, and to manage and provide overall supervision for the program so that it ran within the confines of the enabling legislation.

Yingluck's abysmal failure to perform her duties as set forth in the legislation is the basis of the claims against her for the loss of 600 billion baht. This rendered the act unconstitutional, and is the basis for prosecuting, civilly and criminally, Yingluck for malfeasance.

And the persons who profited. You might be correct that some may have some ethnic Chinese blood, but they are Thai. The same Thai-Chinese who populate Chiang Mai and continue to support PTP. To claim they aren't red is naive. They might not be UDD militants, but they are firmly in the camp of the PTP.

But surely studies have shown that all business in Thailand is accompanied by corruption and the only way to defeat corruption is to imitate Pol Pot and make money illegal, is this what you propose? Corruption prospers here because it is deeply rooted in Thai / Siamese culture and tradition, maybe very hard to stop without doing a Pol Pot.

As far as I know there is no law against being gullible, so these people should be safe.

If they are genuine followers it is their right to show up and show their support. It will not be classed as a political protest either because Yingluck's political career is over.

I would guess if these supporters are for real they are not the ones who were badly affected by the rice scam.

We have two candidates in the US running for President who advocate taking taxpayer money to get those with student loans out of trouble. Is that a populist policy? Every nation is faced with those politicians in government who promote populist policies for getting votes to the politicians own benefit. This case is no different. If the current Thai government was interested in criminally prosecuting even some of the profiteers from this scheme they could have done so.
