Phuket authorities to curb road accidents

PHUKET, 30 October 2015 (NNT)-Police will step up traffic measures in Phuket in an attempt to lower road accidents.

A meeting has been recently held between local authorities and Phuket police over beach management, security and suppression of crimes, human trafficking, and narcotics and efforts to reduce road fatalities.

At the meeting, Phuket Governor Jamroen Thippayapongthada sought police assistance in making sure commuters abide by the traffic regulations to combat a soaring number of road accidents in his province.

The Governor wanted the requirement for motorcyclists to wear a helmet to be strictly enforced. Restaurants and bars would also be prohibited from offering baruku smoking services.

As for beaches, the provincial authorities will develop a beach management plan which will be implemented in 3 districts to keep all beaches organized and orderly.

Sounds like he wants a piece of the RTP's tea money action.

Definitely high on the agenda of curbing road accidents and high on the priority of crimes committed here. Well done Guv.

why are Thai police so averse to enforcing laws regarding moving violations? It is never even considered. The old helmet tea money is about the best they can do, which is pitiful. Smoking services? How about drinking services?

Wearing a helmet might reduce the severity of an accident to the user. In itself it does not go any way to reducing accidents - which the OP implied. If that's his only policy, good luck to Phuket drivers.

Now what can I do to really make a difference for the good of Phuket, peoples safety and improve things overall?

The use of helmets will for sure reduce the accident rate! Maybe the police has to wear helmets also? Who knows, may be one day?

You Phuket forum guys are sure a cynical bunch ;-)

Talking with a mate of mine yesterday, both been here in excess of 20 years, & we agreed all the same old problems still exist. Being cynical almost becomes 2nd nature.

The only way to cut down on road accidents in Thailand is to take all the vehicles and motorbikes off the road, not mention the buses and vans.
