don't pay the rip-off tuk-tuk fees either as no rush & consulate a 10 minute stroll from bus station

Yes, and those tuk-tuk boys will try it on.

Also found the hotels around the bus station to be a bit nicer and cleaner thab those around the embassy, though also a bit more expensive. Think I paid all of 500 baht a night but room was great value for the money.

Savan vegas is also an alternative. It's not the cheapest but you can apply to become VIP online and then it's 1000 Baht/night. That's including a good room with TV (English speaking channels), free breakfast buffet (I even got a coupon for the dinner buffet when I went there) and free WiFi.
