BANGKOK: -- A new BTS station, “Suksa Witthaya”, will be added between the crowded Chong Nonsi and Surasak station to support the increasing amount of passengers in the Sathorn area.

Surapong Laoha-unya, chief operating officer of BTS Group Holdings Public Company Ltd., said the new station will help ease passenger numbers at Chong Nonsi after the area has seen a growing number of residential and office buildings pop up ever since the skytrain opened.

Suksa Witthaya station will be in front of Sathorn Soi 12 near the UOB head office.

Are they going to demolish Saphan Taksin as promised before they build the new one? It gets overcrowded because of the single working over Taksin Bridge which slows the trains down. Get rid of Saphan Taksin and you can have a faster service, which makes more sense.

How will they add an extra station to a working line without closing / disrupting the service for several months?

Not to mention the traffic disruption in the chaotic building site in the road below...

If they used 5 car trains on the Silom line then this would reduce the overcrowding . Many people use the Saphan Taksin station and the boat stations are there.

Taksin Station is critical for the mass transit plan. Busy station feeding to all those river boats.

There was a plan to tear out Taksin Station and put a moving walkway all the way from Surasak, no? Surasak would be mobbed.

Perhaps the new station is needed to add some relief to the Surasak Station when all the river travellers need to exit there?

It is entirely likely that can build the station around the tracks up to a point, then complete it by working during the night when the trains are not running.

This station was planned when the SkyTrain was proposed. It was never built...and now it might.

That's exactly how the ShyTrain extension down Sukhumvit was done. Everything was completed, except laying the metal rails, and the was done 12:30AM to 5AM.

And then we had to wait 2 years for the signalling to be installed! smile.png

And the monks need to pick the right date to begin operations but the Chinese calendar doesn't come out till January.

I can see how it would help crowded platforms at rush hour but that won't ease congestion on the trains themselves, will it? Both Chong Nonsi and Surasak only ever get crowded for around that hour anyway and the stations are already pretty close.

Surasak will be a madhouse when they remove Taksin river station.

Is that actually happening then? That's a real shame, seems like a huge mistake to me, it's such a massively useful station.

I mean in general I think the BTS is excellent, aside from the slight over-crowding issues at rush hour (see also: pretty much every city in the world) but Sappan Thaksin was great for easy access to the river.

And/or increasing the frequency (less time between trains) would help.

Something has to be done as the system is totally overcrowded already.

SL

During the rush hours they are already running as many trains as possible through the bottleneck at Saphan Taksin.

Only because the official who was supposed to order it was afraid of making a mistake and losing his pension. And although his staff wondered what the **** was going on they couldn't challenge the boss. Show some sympathy, please.:gigglem:

Perhaps it will be built around the line as stations do not affect the continuity of the tracks and any work that could disrupt the service could be done when the service is closed.

You're quite right but as that wasn't the plan your question is irrelevant to adding a new station which will do exactly what was planned.

There was a discussion about the possibility of five car trains on BTS lines several years ago.  Somebody who seemed to have some depth of knowledge on the issue claimed that there is a technological issue with the control and braking systems that restricts BTS trains to a maximum of four cars.

Is there anybody reading this who actually knows?

Another emerging difficulty is the stations themselves are not designed to handle the number of passengers now using the system;  for instance Asok and Siam are extremely congested and bordering on impassable at rush hour.

Did anybody else notice that every time the BTS opened a new station, rather than buying new entry gates, they pirated them from other stations, leaving many stations along the line with only two, in & out.  The backup line to exit thru the fare gates can get pretty long these days.
