Operator of van involved in fatal accident fined 7,000 baht



BANGKOK: -- Operator of the commuter’s van which was involved in a fatal accident on the Buraphavithi motorway on Sunday has been fined 7,000 baht and the driver fined 5,000 baht and his driving license suspended 30 days by the Land Transport Department.

The van’s operator, Siracha Tollway Transport Company, and the Transport Company were summoned for a meeting with Mr Sanit Promwong, director-general of Land Transport Department, on Monday, at the LTD after the fatal accident in which four passengers were killed and 10 others injured.

Siracha Tollway Transport Company operates a fleet of 23 commuter’s vans each of which was equipped with a GPS device. The company was granted a licence by Transport Company to operate bus service on Bangkok-Siracha route from April 15 to March 18. The company has a clean record operations until Sunday.

Besides the fines, Siracha Tollway Transport Company’s operations were suspended for one day and told to seek compensation for the dead and injured victims from insurance companies.

Using the accident as an example, the LTD has ordered its branch office in Chon Buri to organize training courses for commuter’s van drivers on how to drive safely and to subject Siracha Tollway’s vans to inspection.

Only the vans which pass the inspection will be allowed back on the road, said the LTD chief.

Amazing how cheap life is here, 5,000 baht fine and 30 days license suspension. Then he back on the road again to kill more innocent people.

That is Thai justice, make of it what you will ? Life is cheap.

Social media may end up slowly changing the Thai justice system. The stronger the public indignation (and the resulting loss of face from the culpable parties) the quicker things get acted upon.The squeaky wheel gets the grease and Thais are just starting to squeak.

Minmum should have been 5 years in the slammer, of course if your not Thai and on a certain island you would probably get the death sentence for 2 deaths more than likely not your doing - but TIT.

Just rereading the article, and see it was the transport department who decided on the fines and licence cancellation - let's hope the police think differently.

How about 1 years income for each death and 6 months for each injury - make it meaningful not pussy-footing around.

Therein lies the problem of Thailand's roads.....almost zero law enforcement and punitive punishment for serious offenders. Don't bet on it changing soon because if anyone could get it sorted it's the man running the country right now.....but he does nothing whatsoever to resolve the problem.

Don't forget that word is banned under article 44
