Tinea / Fungal And Other Skin Problems, Esp'y in Thailand, Experience, Advice

This is my good deed for the day, GOOD advice for you if you suffer from skin splotches, jock itch, athlete's foot, Majocchi, ringworm, all forms of fungal infection known as tinea. I first got tinea in Montana in 1967 from very hot sun and profuse sweating, skin discoloration called tinea versicolor. Tinactin would clear it up fairly well, but never entirely and it would always creep back. After moving to Thailand ten years ago, it got MUCH worse due to the humidity and heat. Tinactin is too expensive and not a lot better than the tubes of miconazole from China that can be bought in the markets for 10-20 baht each. For 10 years it got to be a worsening battle. I had to scrub vigorously in showers and went through a tube a week. I also got bad jock itch (tinea cruris), a nail infection and for a while a nasty Majocchi granuloma on both arms.

Some people have had luck with various fungicides and sometimes corticosteroid creams. I would STRONGLY advise against corticosteroid creams and they can permanently damage the skin in the most horrific ways and actually cause the problem to become worse. Majocchi granulomas can be triggered by such drugs. These are terrible infections. I cured mine by "pulse" treatments of itraconazole - one week of high dose on, about two weeks off, three pulses in all should do it if 2 don't.

But even after the itraconazole pulses cured the Majocchi, I still had splotches all over my chest and some on my arms and back, same old problem. Then I read that Selsun shampoo (selenium sulfide) could be used to get rid of tinea versicolor on the scalp. I had none there, but decided to try rubbing it on my chest and arms after each shower, leave a few minutes, then rinse it off. Well, wham, after almost 50 years of battling tinea, it was GONE GONE GONE, entirely. This took about two weeks, for the last 5 months I've not had a single spot of any size. I still have some difficulty with jock itch, but am hoping more treatment with the Selsun will get rid of that, too, but at least I no longer have that horrible looking discoloration on my chest and arms.

I'm hoping this will help someone out there. Have a fungus free day in Thailand. If anyone has other good experiences that could be of help as well, please post them here.

For jock itch I would recommend you buy a tube of Quadraderm, available from any pharmacy and slap that on three times a day. Jock itch can be bacterial or fungal, but guadraderm has both antibiotic and anti fungal agents. It was recommended on another thread. It certainly worked for me. Selsun is only anti fungal.

Posted

Tinea versicolor doesn't get inflammed whereas jock itch does and I think that Selsun will be an irritant if used in those tender parts. Quadraderm also has some cortisone that will be anti inflammatory. Just use it for five days or so.

Try spraying colloidal silver on the infected skin areas. CS kills bacteria and virus on contact and not harmful to skin at all, amazing stuff.

Many consider colloidal silver an antiseptic and not an antibiotic because it kills more than bacteria; it destroys viruses and eliminates fungal infections. So far, bacteria that are resistant to silver haven’t developed, while colloidal silver can destroy antibiotic-resistant pathogens, even the dreaded MRSA.

There is ZERO evidence for "colloidal silver" tbeing effective for the treatment of anything. It is a substance peddled by Quacks.

The American Food and Drug Administration has taken action against some manufacturers of colloidal silver products for making unproven health claims.

I live in a high humidity area without air conditioning (Phuket.... 50 metres from beach)

My body is continually bathed in perspiration and fighting tinea became an ongoing battle.

I tried Quadriderm which worked well but I was concerned by its toxicity with long term usage

My western dermatologist recommended I treat my jock rash with 50/50 5% distilled vinegar/water in a spray bottle daily.

Works!

Also, I use same in foot bath daily to treat my athlete's foot.

Well both silver and gold is used to kill bacteria in water treatment. While this doesn't mean that it works on the body, it is proven and it is some evidence (so not zero evidence).

Travogen has worked for me. You can buy large tubes of it at Thai pharmacies. You need to keep applying it for a while after the fungus appears to be gone for a sure cure.

Ok, THANKS to you ALL for some great comments. However, I have NO idea where I can find colloidal silver in Chiang Mai, I've been looking for ten years, nada. Many do insist it is very effective. Someone clue me in if you can. Quadriderm and Travogen I will keep an eye out for now, but clue me in if you know where I can find it in Chiang Mai. Meanwhile, the jock itch problem is mild, while the tinea versicolor is totally wiped. Another service I might add is that I've had serious problems with customs snatching my vitamins these last two years, first Puritans (who now refuses to ship to Thailand) and now Swanson's. These are crucial to my well being, but now I find that all are available in Thailand direclty here: http://swansonthailand.net/kirkland-vitamins/

If anyone knows where I can find Quadriderm and/or Travogen in CM, let me know, but Dog claims that it's easy to find, so I'll be looking. I'm a bit out of circulation here in Sanpatong, but get to CM about once a week for church.

Well, then, guess I'll have to take a look, give me awhile, I'm no stranger to drugstores in Thailand, but many pharmacies carry very little of anything, and I won't bother to prove you wrong here in Sanpatong. I admire your belief, but they definitely won't have it here. As for the Quackwatch site, I am very well aware that this is operated by the real quacks and some very nasty, dishonest people. They represent mercury amalgam and fluoride interests which are backed by the very worst people. I have no personal experience with colloidal silver, but it has a very strong following and long history, definitely warrants a look. The medical industry does not support cures or good health, while Quackwatch is nothing but a shameless slut for big pharma. Anyway, colloidal silver I have looked for from time to time and have never found it in Chiang Mai, so that should have been the question.

Ok, well, I blew it because I did go to a store here in Sanpatong and check these out. The Travogen was 300 baht a tube, really a lot for a shot in the dark, so I forked over 200 baht for the Quadriderm. This has tolnaftate which I know will not cure tinea v. but then I haven't tried it on jock itch. I figured why not give it a try by virtue of the other ingredients, then afterwards, dang, I realize that it has betamethasone and iodochlorhydroxyquin, both potent corticosteroids that I mentioned in my first post as being extremely dangerous. So, really, I wouldn't use it, sorry to say. I must be more careful, and I definitely would advise anyone from using such stuff. Meanwhile, after a few applications of Selsun, the jock itch is not present on the surface for a couple of weeks, but can't say it won't return. Dang, made a fool of myself again. This is an example of what these steroids can do. http://bit.ly/1ksOoVd

The claims made on that "thai-herb" website for "colloidal sliver" would rapidly attract the attention of regulatory authorities in the West as they are false and cannot be evidenced.

Good grief. Short term use of corticosteroids won't do you any harm. It's a proven effective anti inflammatory that's been around for years. There's nothing in the medical literature that shows otherwise for short term use. Inform yourself properly. Selsun will do nothing for you if it is bacterial. It can also be a skin irritant.

Thank you Muskoka! As for quackwatch, I'll say it again, this is the dirtiest, most vicious, underhanded group there ever was. I don't have to go there and see what it has to say, because it's a pack of liars, and as I said, sluts for the pharma industry. Colloidal silver has been used to good effect for many centuries. As for a lack of "scientific" evidence, that's exactly what you'd expect being that real science is not affordable or accessible to the general public. Many have sworn by it, and when you don't have any other viable options, it's worth a try. "Rapidly attract the attention...." PLEASE give us a break. You can buy it just about anywhere, I've just never had the time and I don't trust customs that much.

Well, swore I'd never touch steroids, but if mine comes back I'll slap some Quad on it for a week or so. The azoles (no pu intended) do work, more or less, I'll mix it with some miconazole; meanwhile, I'll apply a little Selsun after showers. I've never had any trouble getting rid of the jock itch, haven't had it now for some time, but it's only laying low, not entirely gone, and ready to jump back. I guess a short term use of Quad at the right time might do it. Meanwhile, since the selenium wiped out the tinea versicolor, I've bought some as internal supplements, could be that there was a deficiency. Thanks for the tip, it's well worth a try.

After 12 days I should report on the jock itch problem. It was not causing any irritation, but reddish areas under the skin indicated it was just dormant for a while and bound to erupt again. So, I started using a combination of miconazole cream and the Quad despite my concerns about the dangers of these corticosteroids. I've been doing 3 applications a day. Well, there is still some redness on the right leg, but I can't be sure if it's gone or not. I've probably got a couple more days of the Quad left, then I'll discontinue and wait and see. The cooler weather is in my favor, so it may be several more weeks before a verdict can be made. I'm just really hoping that this will do it. I suppose I should be also doing a 10 day pulse of itraconazole tablets, that stuff works really well for some serious fungi problems.

Just about any OTC antifungal should work. Combination lotions like quadriderm are especially effective as they cover all angles. Corticosteroids are especially effective if there is an element of dermititis. Corticosteroids used sparingly and for short courses are perfectly safe. One would usually expect improvement almost immediately and certainly within a few days. If not, it might be a good idea to see a doctor. Likely a minor issue, perhaps contact dermititis or eczema. It could also be that the infection has effected deeper layers of the skin and you might need to take tablets.

20 plus years ago a doctor in the uk recommended dabbing on selsun, post shower, as a treatment for tinea. as far as I can remember it worked pretty well back then. It comes back occasionally and ,now you have reminded me, I will try that again, I presume its easily available in Thailand. boots?

Well, it seems my jock itch has returned, I only took the Ketoconazole for 7 days, & as the symptoms went, I stopped taking them.

Been putting 2% Miconazole Cream on the area; but reluctant to use K'zole again for a longer period, as they can affect the Liver a bit.

It does seem that it is a deeper infection of the skin. You may be better off working with a doctor, as you may need a longish course of tablets which requires medical supervision. As you've seen this is curable and there is no need to be concerned.

Ok, well I have some good news I hope. Yes, this kind of infection is deep (tinea cruris it's called). Ok, I rubbed good amount of the Quad on each side and then some miconazole cream. Planned to take your advice and do it for a week, but suspected yours would come back, so just used up most of the tube over 2 weeks, probably about a tube and a half of miconazole which sells for 10-20 baht at most markets. So far two weeks have gone by and it seems to be gone now. If it isn't I'll be back with another post, but it's looking pretty good. The tablets you're talking about are probably itraconazole. You don't have to have a doctor, just Google for the dosages and buy the stuff. I had to use two ten day pulses of that (with 2 weeks off between) to get rid of the Majocchi granuloma on my arms that sprang from the tinea versicolor a couple years back. That's the only thing that will get rid of that and nail infections except a more expensive fungicide. It did NOT get rid of the jock itch even though I added a 3rd pulse a few weeks after. The Majocchi was a nightmare, seemed to have set in following two bouts of Dengue fever and never ending colds. That's when I got back on the vitamins and minerals. I am NOW nearly renewed, no tinea versicolor, no Dengue symptoms, doing 40 pullups and 50 dips at the gym, knock on wood for the jock itch.

Sanook, haven't gotten to your vinegar method. I'm more interested in getting entirely rid of it. Well, back now to report that the quadriderm didn't work, a week later it was back. SOOOO, was wanting to get the colloidal silver - remember the dude who claimed CS was a scam, giving links to the quackbusters and threatening with the FDA, weird! Anyway, couldn't get to the store someone gave, just too hard, but did find a tube of silver sulferdiazene cream, usually for burns but it's still silver, more or less. Anyway, have been applying that 3x/day and miconazole 3x, now for a month. Once again, it does seem to be gone, but it will take a week or two to know for sure. It's never a problem if I use miconazole cream daily, but I get tired of going through the stuff. Sorry it's taking so long to settle this matter.

I suppose I should be also doing a 10 day pulse of itraconazole tablets, that stuff works really well for some serious fungi problems.

GOOD NEWS: No fungal cream will work on the jock itch for me. I tried adding in the quad that seemed to work for someone else, but it came back for him and for me too it turned out within a week. I then tried 3x/day miconazole and silver sulfadiazene both. I couldn't get to the colloidal silver, too far from here, but thought the silver sulfadiazene might be close enough, though that is usually used for burns. This I did for five weeks and can finally report GOOD NEWS. This combination finally worked after many years. The micanozole alone if used daily would keep it from flaring up, but within a few days it would bounce right back. Now it really is gone along with the tinea versicolor all over my chest and arms. There are TWO things that must be said: 1) NEVER try to entirely cure any of these infections without washing your clothes in mild bleach for that period. Bleach will wipe out fungal spores, but if not, you'll probably get re infected quickly. Oh, yeah, bed sheets, too. 2) Jock itch, aka tinea cruris, is a particularly nasty fungus that gets deep into the skin. However, if you skip a shower even one day in this climate, your balls and crotch will soon be itching from less virulent forms of yeast. Just so we all understand that. As for the tinea that was so widespread, it hasn't shown any sign of return after several months, and hope the jock itch will be the same.

REPEATING this for your sake...
