Google Maps offline navigation for Android - anyone tried?

Featured Replies

Just read misc reports about improvements of Google maps for off-line navigation.

So far only available for Android.

Has someone already tried (for Thailand)?

You'd need to download the map for offline use first, which doesn't appear to be possible here - at least not for me in Bangkok.

Are you on mobile internet?

I read that the download can only be done on WiFi.

Was too lazy to try it on my own yet whistling.gif

Will do a test in the afternoon.

I'm using ver 9.16.2 and offline maps isn't an option.

This link ( https://support.google.com/gmm/answer/6291838 ) says its not available everywhere. Ah well back to Sygic and TomTom maps again.

I did some short attempts yesterday for a Thailand route and didn't find the download option.

My internet line was cut down and repaired today so no time for another attempt yet.

Would be interesting whether any TV member wherever in the world could find it...

Good that I have HERE maps too tongue.png

The method for downloading maps for offline use on Android is rather bizarre. You find the area you're after, then type 'ok maps' into the search box.

Like I said, though, it doesn't seem to work here - it just says 'area unavailable'.

I use an app called Smart Maps Offline. The free version has ads but there is a paid version that gets rid of them. I've used it in Europe, Thailand, and Vietnam so far with no problems. Not perfect but gets the job done. It is available on Google Play.

I have downloaded Google Map sections for Italy and other European countries, but for Thailand it is still not possible.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Obviously no maps for Thailand.

So the topic is done for me (for now).

KhunBenq, an alternative could be (Free) Maps.me
